BYU's Sami Oblad broke her own school record in the 400 meters at the Robison Invitational on Saturday, May 3, 2025.

Sami Oblad ran 50.49 in the 400-meters to break her own school record Saturday at the Clarence F. Robison Outdoor Track & Field.

The senior from Stansbury Park broke her own school record of 51.79, set on April 19 at the 2025 Mt. SAC Relays, by more than a second.

Oblad’s 50.49 ranks No. 5 in the NCAA this season and leads the Big 12, further solidifying her place among the NCAA’s premier quarter-milers.

“That race was absolutely stunning by Sami,” said BYU sprints and hurdles coach Kyle Grossarth. “I am so proud of her and what she has accomplished. Sami and Emily [Ellis-Dalley] have worked hard together all year and it was great for them to be able to showcase that here in front of a home crowd.”

Ellis-Dalley placed third with a personal-best time of 53.77, cracking the program’s all-time top 10 board. The senior from Highland, Utah now ranks No. 7 in school history.

Freshman Annie Nuttall also ran a personal best of 56.37 to place seventh, while sophomore Madelynne Taggart finished ninth in 57.25.

On the men’s side, three runners in the 400m moved up on the program’s all-time list Saturday afternoon.

Eli Hazlett won the 400m with a personal-best time of 45.24 seconds, beating his previous mark of 46.27. The senior’s performance moves him to No. 2 on the program’s all-time 400 list, just behind Michael Bluth’s 45.13 set in 2021.

Senior Josh Taylor ran a personal-best 45.74 seconds at Saturday’s meet, edging out his previous mark of 45.76. Trey Jackson clocked 45.84 seconds, tying Bob Tobler’s 1964 time for No. 6 on the program’s all-time list.

The Cougars will travel to Lawrence, Kansas, to compete at the Big 12 Championship at Rock Chalk Park from May 15-17.

Softball falls short in final game against No. 11 Texas Tech

BYU softball dropped game three of its series with No. 11 Texas Tech, 2-1 at Gail Miller Field on Saturday evening.

The senior night contest and regular season finale drew 1,608 fans.

The Cougars (31-16, 13-11 Big 12) honored five seniors following the game: infielder Keila Kamoku, outfielder Aleia Agbayani, outfielder Lauren Flanders, right-handed pitcher Alyssa Aguilar and catcher Lindy Milkowski.

Kaysen Korth went four innings, allowing six hits and two runs while striking out three for BYU.

The Red Raiders got on the scoreboard first as a two-RBI single gave them a 2-0 advantage in the top of the third.

Freshman Ilove’a Brittingham homered to left center for her second solo home run of the series, bringing the game to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth.

Brittingham’s 20 homers on the season are good for the second-most home runs by a freshman in BYU softball history, passing All-American Libby Suggs’ record from 2016.

BYU’s senior Kamoku tagged a player out at third base who was caught in a pickle for a crucial out, leading to zero runs allowed by the Cougar defense in the top of the fifth.

The Cougar defense also pulled off a double play from shortstop to first base in the top of the sixth to keep their momentum going.

With the score remaining at 2-1 through six and a half innings, the Cougars needed action from their offense to survive in the final frame. After a fly out, foul out and strikeout, however, the game would conclude, with Texas Tech winning the game and the series, 2-1.

On Deck BYU awaits its seed in the Big 12 Championship which will be held at OGE Field at Devon Park in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, starting on Wednesday.
