Cougars break out the big bats in 13-4 rout of Texas Tech

The BYU baseball team celebrates a 13-4 Big 12 victory against Texas Tech at Miller Park on Thursday, May 15, 2025.BYU baseball bashed two triples, two home runs and seven total runs in the fourth inning to defeat Texas Tech 13-4 at Miller Park on Thursday night.
With the win, the Cougars move to 26-25 overall and 9-19 in Big 12 play while the Red Raiders fell to 19-31 and 12-16. BYU’s win along with UCF and Utah losses on Thursday kept the Cougars in position for the final spot in the 2025 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Tournament.
“It was good, an all-phases tonight,” said head coach Trent Pratt. “We threw a ton of strikes and got some big hits, and that’s a recipe to win.”
The Cougars took an early lead with a two-run first inning. BYU held the lead the entire game, with seven runs scored in the fourth inning. Texas Tech scored runs in the second, fourth, sixth and eighth innings, but the Cougars secured a 13-4 win with three quick outs in the top of the ninth.
BYU’s Hayden Coon earned the win on the mound and moves to 3-1 on the season.
BYU’s Thursday win marks its 14th game with 10 or more runs scored this season, doubling up its double-digit scoring games total from a season ago. With three triples on the night, the Cougars recorded just the 16th game in program history with three or more three-baggers, and its most in a game since 2017.
BYU turned two double plays in the victory over the Red Raiders. The Cougars now rank eighth nationally in double plays with 47 on the season.
Parker Goff went 2-for-4 including a double and a home run while driving in three. , Tate Gambill (3 for 4, three runs, two triples, a double and an RBI) and Ryder Robinson (3 for 4, two runs, a homer, four RBI) also had big nights. Bryker Herdsman also contributed with three RBI.
Robinson doubled to left field in the first inning and advanced to third base on a fly out. Cooper Vest singled to right field and brought Robinson home for the Cougars’ first run of the game. A double to right field from Hurdsman sent Vest sliding home for a 2-0 BYU lead.
The Red Raiders answered with a leadoff solo homer in the top of the second, but Goff answered with a double to left center and scored on Gambill’s triple to right field, giving the Cougars a 3-1 advantage through two innings.
Texas Tech scored another run in the top of the fourth off a sacrifice fly to right field to cut the lead to 3-2.
BYU’s seven-inning scoring barrage began with Brock Watkins singling to left and reaching second after Matt Hansen walked. Both players advanced a base on a balk then came home as Goff blasted a three-run homer over the leftfield wall.
Gambill hit his second triple of the game to right field, and Robinson hit a home run to left field to put two more BYU runs on the board. Luke Anderson singled up the middle and scored off a triple from Hurdsman. Watkins then singled to left field, bringing Hurdsman in to score. By inning’s end, the Cougars had scored seven runs on seven hits with two homers and two triples for a 10-2 lead.
Gambill walked in the bottom of the fifth and stole second before Robinson singled up the middle to plate Gambill for another BYU run.
The Red Raiders scored their third and fourth runs of the game in the sixth and seventh innings, both on sacrifice flies.
Gambill doubled to left field to start the bottom of the eighth, and scored the Cougars’ 12th run of the game on a Robinson single to right field. Robinson advanced to second on an Anderson walk and Vest was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Anderson scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Hurdsman, and with three quick outs in the top of the ninth, BYU clinched the 13-4 win.
