BYU men's basketball has signed the nation's top junior college player, guard KJ Perry, to a letter of intent. He will join the Cougars in December. The nation’s top-ranked junior college basketball player is a Cougar as KJ Perry has signed a scholarship agreement, BYU head men’s basketball coach Kevin Young announced on Wednesday afternoon.
“KJ is a dynamic guard who can score it, create for his teammates and bring real athleticism to our backcourt,” Young said in a news release. “We love his competitiveness, his confidence and the edge he plays with every possession. He’s going to make us better the moment he steps on campus–pushing our guards in practice and then stepping in as a playmaker in our backcourt.”
Perry is ranked as the No. 1 JUCO player in the country and a four-star recruit by 247 Sports after being named a Top 20 All-Star at the All-American JUCO Showcase Invitational in July. The 6-foot-2 guard is scheduled to join the program in December after spending his freshman season at Citrus College.
He was named a JucoRecruiting.com Fab 50 Freshman in 2024-25 after averaging 17.5 points per game, shooting 49.5% from the field, 34.7% from three and 77.2% from the free-throw line.
The native of Pacific Palisades, California, scored in double figures 25 times, including a trio of 30-point performances. He scored a career-high 48 points in the Owls’ 134-126 triple overtime victory over Santiago Canyon, going 14 of 23 from the field, 3 of 8 from behind the arc and 17 of 21 from the charity stripe.
The Cougars also announced the signing of G League big man Abdullah Ahmed, who committed on Monday. The native of Cairo, Egypt, will also join the Cougars in December.
“He’s an elite rim protector and rebounder with great size, length, and skill,” Young said. “We love his defensive mindset, his ability to run the floor and the energy he plays with around the basket. He’s going to help anchor our defense, finish plays at the rim and give us a real presence in the paint, along with skill that fits in great with our style of play.”
Ahmed signs with the Cougars after spending two seasons in the G League with the Westchester Knicks. During the 2024-25 season, Ahmed appeared in 15 games, including eight starts, where he averaged 4.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game.
BYU’s class of 2026 also includes two high school seniors in 6-foot-8 Dean Rueckert and 6-foot-10 Will Openshaw, both of whom were All-State selections for Timpview High School last season. Rueckert and Openshaw also signed on Wednesday.
“We’re so excited to welcome Dean and his family to BYU,” Young said. “We’ve been able to build a great relationship with them and can’t wait to see Dean in BYU blue. He grew up here and we are excited that his story can continue with Cougar Nation. He’s a long, versatile wing who can really shoot the ball, put it on the floor and guard multiple positions. His size, skill and feel for the game fit perfectly with the way we want to play.
“Will Openshaw fits everything that BYU is about. We are excited to get him in our locker room after his mission. He is a skilled, confident playmaker with a great feel for the game and a competitiveness that really stands out. He can impact winning in a lot of different ways on both ends of the floor and fits perfectly with how we want to play. We can’t wait to get him in BYU blue and watch him grow in our program.”
Rueckert enters his senior season at Timpview High School rated as a four-star recruit and the 6th recruit in the 2026 class, according to SC Next 100. He is also ranked as a four-star recruit by 247 Sports and On3.
Another highly rated prospect, Texas four-star guard Austin Goosby, has announced a final four of BYU, Texas, Baylor and Duke. According to Vanquish the Foe, Goosby will make his choice on Friday.
