BYU Roundup: Davis breaks freshman record as No. 25 Cougars defeat Arizona

Led by freshman outside hitter Suli Davis, No. 25 BYU women’s volleyball beat Arizona in four sets (25-18, 25-23, 19-25, 25-18) at the Smith Fieldhouse on Wednesday night.

The Cougars (19-8, 7-8 Big 12) saw Davis tie her career high in kills (28) while breaking the program’s rally-scoring era freshman kill record of 447. She now has 466 on the year, and also posted her team-leading seventh double-double on the year with 14 digs.

Claire Little Chambers followed with 22 kills of her own, hitting .450 on the night. Alex Bower led the team in assists with 57, just one shy of her career high of 58.

Lulu Uluave set a career high with four aces and joined Davis in double figures with 12 digs, while Elli Mortensen added 10. Brielle Kemavor, Sophia Callahan and Elena Wallace each has two blocks.

BYU out-hit Arizona, .369 to .339, had 17 more kills (71-54) and 12 more digs (57-45). The Wildcats outblocked the Cougars, 10 to four and had two less service errors (7-5), but BYU had four more aces (7-3).

The Cougars won the first two sets but the Wildcats responded with a strong performance in Set 3.

Arizona outscored the Cougars 7-5 to open the fourth set, but a 4-0 run put BYU back on top 9-7. After trading scores, the Wildcats put up a 4-0 run, moving the score to 16-15 for Arizona.

Kemavor then had her fourth kill of the set, tying it at 17-17. Following the tie, BYU closed out the set with an 8-1 run off kills from Davis and Bower, taking the set and the match, 25-18.

The Cougars continue their three-game home stretch against No. 13 Kansas on Friday, Nov. 21, at 6 p.m. MST, with streaming available on ESPN+.

Hudgins goes for career-high 23 points as BYU holds off Montana

MISSOULA, Mont. — BYU women’s basketball stays perfect as the Cougars knocked off the Montana Lady Griz 70-69 at Dahlberg Arena on Wednesday night.

“The girls fought really hard tonight, and it takes everybody to win a game like that when you are on the road,” head coach Lee Cummard said. “Our team is going to learn a lot from this experience, especially for those who haven’t played true road games in college yet. We still have a lot to work on, but I am thrilled with how our team fought to win this game.”

The Cougars trailed Montana 69-64 with 3:37 remaining before putting together five defensive stops in a row to hold the Lady Griz scoreless over the final 3:37. In that time, Marya Hudgins and Arielle Mackey-Williams combined for six-straight points to earn the Cougars a 70-69 victory.

Hudgins led the way for the Cougars, scoring a career-high 23 points on 7-of-15 shooting, going 7-for-9 from the charity stripe and knocking down two key triples. The redshirt junior also recorded four rebounds, two assists and two steals in the win.

Olivia Hamlin and Lara Rohkohl were the other two Cougars to finish in double figures with 12 and 10 points apiece. Hamlin also turned in eight rebounds to go along with an assist, a steal and a block. Rohkohl was 5-of-6 from the floor with nine rebounds, four coming on the offensive glass, and two steals in the win.

The Cougars only dressed nine players on Wednesday against the Lady Griz, and the walking wounded included leading scorer Delaney Gibb (16.2 points per game).

Mackey-Williams playing a season-high 27 minutes on the guard line. The redshirt junior, who missed the last two seasons due to injury, scored eight key points, including a left-corner triple to knot the game at 69 with 2:03 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Hudgins then knocked down the game-winning free throw with 1:13 remaining and the Cougars managed a last-second defensive stand for the 70-69 road win.

BYU (5-0) returns home to face a second-straight Big Sky team as the Weber State Wildcats visit the Marriott Center on Saturday, Nov. 22.
