CINCINNATI — Wednesday’s Big 12 women’s volleyball matchup between No. 19 BYU and Cincinnati, as the kids say, left no crumbs.

The highly-competitive match featured 32 ties and 11 lead changes, as well as an offensive battle royale between Cougar freshman Suli Davis and Bearcats star Nolan Sydney.

In the end, BYU managed an intense and hard-fought 3-1 (24-26, 25-19, 27-25, 26-24) victory at First Third Arena to move to 14-1 overall and 2-1 in Big 12 play.

Sydney was spectacular, finishing with 25 kills on 52 swings and, amazingly, zero hitting errors (.481). Davis was nearly as good, posting a career-high 27 kills and hitting .333 as the Cougars survived a first set loss and three of the sets going to extra points in the victory.

The 27 kills was the second-most by a BYU freshman in the rally scoring era. Alexa Gray had 29 twice during her freshman season in 2012.

Claire Little Chambers (18 kills), Sophia Callahan (12) and Brielle Kemavor (11) joined Davis in double figure kills. Kemavor had 15 swings with zero errors (.733) and added a team-high four block assists.

Little Chambers and Alex Bower both posted double-doubles in the contest, with Little Chambers adding 10 digs and Bower recording a career-high 16 to go along with 54 assists.

Davis was a dig shy of a double-double of her own, as was libero Emma Barbero, who had nine assists and 13 digs.

The Cougars outhit the Bearcats .329 to .290, also recording 14 (71 to 57) more kills.

The win avenged a five-set loss to Cincinnati last season in Provo.

BYU led 19-16 in Set 1 but the Bearcats, behind Sydney, stormed back and won 26-24. The Cougars went on a 7-1 run in the middle of Set 2 and won comfortably 25-19. BYU took control of Set 3 and led 23-16 but Cincinnati rallied with 8-0 burst, taking a 24-23 advantage and reaching set point on a Cougar attack error. BYU fought off a pair of set points and tied the set at 25 on a Davis kill. A Callahan scoring swing gave the Cougars set point, and Davis slammed down a kill for the winner at 27-25 and a 2-1 lead in the match.

Cincinnati worked its was to a 12-9 lead in Set 4 but BYU kept battling and eventually tied things up at 21-all on a Davis attack. The set was tied at 22, 23 and 24 before Kemavor bounced a swing off the floor for match point. On the next serve, a Cincinnati attack sailed long and BYU claimed the 26-24 victory and the match.

BYU will complete its East Coast swing at West Virginia on Friday at 4 pm. MT. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
