BYU's Evan Johnson (0) celebrates a 33-27 double overtime victory at Arizona on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2025.

Everything was going wrong, so BYU naturally just handed the ball to their freshman quarterback and basically said, “Win it for us.”

Bear Bachmeier rushed for two touchdowns — one to tie the game with 19 seconds left in regulation and the other to give the Cougars the lead in the second overtime — and the BYU defense got a fourth-down stop to end a messy but beautiful 33-27 victory at Arizona.

The Cougars jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter but the Wildcats cut the deficit to 14-7 heading into the second quarter. The game was delayed more than an hour due to lightning strikes in the Tucson area, and Arizona took advantage to surge to a 17-14 halftime lead.

The Wildcats led 24-14 entering the fourth quarter but Bachmeier engineered two key drives, one resulting in a Will Ferrin field goal and the other a 2-yard run to force overtime.

Both teams knocked in field goals in the first overtime session. Bachmeier scored on a 7-yard run for the 33-27 lead but the Cougars failed on the two-point conversion attempt.

Arizona penetrated to the BYU 10-yard line on its second overtime possession but on 4th and 6, Noah Fifita’s pass to the end zone was incomplete and the Cougars survived to go 6-0 overall, 3-0 in the Big 12.

LJ Martin ran for a career-high 162 yards on 25 carries and scored a touchdown for BYU. Fifita finished 25 of 45 for 219 yards, two touchdowns and one interception for Arizona (4-2, 2-2).
