Late in the fourth quarter, BYU freshman quarterback Bear Bachmeier carried half of the Utah defense into the end zone for the clinching score.
This kid is making a name for himself.
LJ Martin ran for 120 yards and the Cougar defense had four fourth-down stops, but it was Bachmeier, just as he did last week in overtime against Arizona, that took the team home to a 24-21 victory against No. 23 Utah.
BYU led 10-7 at halftime and a 49-yard touchdown run by Daniel Bray pushed the Utes to a 14-10 advantage early in the fourth quarter.
The Cougars responded with an eight-play, 81-yard drive capped by a 12-yard Parker Kingston run for a 17-10 lead with 11:19 remaining.
Bachmeier’s 22-yard quarterback keeper with 5:02 to play put BYU up 24-14. After a fourth-down stop, BYU reached well within Will Ferrin’s field goal range but opted to take an end zone shot on fourth down that fell incomplete.
Utah put a touchdown on the board with 1:24 to play to trim the deficit to 24-21 but failed to recover an onside kick. When the clock hit zeros, the BYU fans stormed the field as fireworks went off over the south end zone scoreboard.
BYU (7-0, 4-0 Big 12) will travel to Iowa State next Saturday.
