Wildcats pummels Cougar baseball 16-3

Kansas State pounded out 17 hits and cruised to a 16-3 midweek non-conference win against BYU at Miller Park on Tuesday.

With the loss, the Cougars fall to 13-14 (4-5) on the year, while KSU improved to 19-10 (4-5).

Kansas State took control early, scoring four runs in the first inning, and continued its strong offensive showing throughout the afternoon with six home runs. The Cougars got home runs from  Ezra McNaughton and Easton Jones, but it was not nearly enough. Using the midweek game as a staff day, eight BYU pitchers surrendered 17 hits, 15 earned runs, six home runs, five doubles and five walks while compiling 11 strikeouts.

Jones finished 3-of-4 with 2 RBI and McNaughton was 2 of 4 with an RBI for the Cougars, which managed eight hits.

Before the Cougars had a chance to bat, the Wildcats got on the board quickly with a pair of home runs, helping the visitors to a 4-0 in the top of the first. With one out, BYU cut into the Kansas State lead with a home run from McNaughton in the bottom half of the first, his ninth of the season, tying the team high.

Kansas State added to its lead over the next four innings with back-to-back two-run frames, followed by single runs in the fourth and fifth for a 10-1 advantage.

After holding the Wildcats scoreless for the first time in the top of the sixth, BYU recorded its second home run of the game as Jones sent his 10th of the season over the left-field wall. With  Ryder Robinson  already on base, the deficit was cut to 10-3.

Kansas State capped off the scoring with six more runs over the next two innings, including five in the eighth for a 16-3 win.

BYU is back on the road later this week with its fourth Big 12 series of the year. The Cougars travel to Waco, Texas, for a three-game Big 12 series with the Baylor Bears April 2-4.
