BYU's Bryker Hurdsman and the Cougars swept Houston in a Big 12 baseball series April 9-11, 2026.

HOUSTON — BYU baseball defeated Houston 6-1 Saturday at Schroeder Park to sweep its first Big 12 three-game series since joining the league for the 2023-2024 season.

Right fielder Bryker Hurdsman went 2-for-4 with three RBI to pace the Cougar offense, while righty reliever Nate Gray picked up his conference leading sixth win of the year.

BYU (18-16, 8-7) scored six runs on nine hits while leaving just three runners on base, while Houston (16-18, 3-12) had one run on eight hits while stranding eight runners.

The Cougars won Game 1 3-2 on Thursday and Game 2 by a 6-2 count on Friday.

“It was a great weekend for our baseball team,” said BYU head baseball coach Trent Pratt. “Our pitchers did a great job of throwing strikes and making Hoston hit. Our defense was also great today, like they were in the first two games. We also got several big hits in key moments from the offense, like Hurdsman’s two-out single in the sixth that broke the game open for us. We just played great team baseball.”

BYU got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second inning. Tu’alau Wolfgramm led off the innings with a double, and stole third base on the next pitch. Bryker Hurdsman then drove in Wolfgramm with an infield ground ball for the early 1-0 lead.

Houston tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third with a leadoff home run by third baseman Jackson LaLima.

Luke Anderson led off the top of the sixth inning with a single down the left field line and moved to second on a single to center by  Ryder Robinson. Easton Jones then doubled to right center to score Anderson and move Robinson to third. With two outs, Hurdsman singled to right field to score both runners and push the BYU lead to 4-1.

BYU picked up an insurance run in the seventh on an Anderson home run to left field and another one in the ninth off another solo blast down the left field line by Keoni Painter for the 6-1 win.

Cayson Bell got BYU off to a great start on the mound, going 4.1 innings while scattering six hits and surrendering just one run. Nate Gray came on in relief, going 2.2 innings with no earned runs for the win, his sixth on the year. Gray is now tied for the Big 12 lead in wins.

Dan Brousseau and Tyler Ball combined to hold UH hitless in the eighth and ninth innings to close out the win. Houston had runners on base in each of the first eight innings on Saturday, but the BYU defense turned four double plays to keep UH from scoring.

BYU will remain in Texas and travel east from Houston to Beaumont to take on Lamar on Monday at 6:05 p.m. CT at Vincent-Beck Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and on the BYU Radio app, BYUradio.org, SiriusXM 143 and 107.9 FM in Utah County.

Men’s volleyball earns split with No. 4 USC

The No. 10 Cougars dropped a five-set decision to No. 4 USC (25-19, 27-29, 25-18, 21-25, 12-15) on Saturday night at the Smith Fieldhouse.

BYU now moves to 20-9 overall this season and 7-5 in MPSF play to sit in fourth place in the conference. Just two matches remain in the regular season for the Cougars next weekend at No. 1 UCLA. BYU then returns home to host the MPSF Tournament.

“I’m super proud of the guys, and losses are always tough, but you live and you learn,” said  Shawn Olmstead, BYU head coach. “We’re going on the road now, but we’re excited to get back to Provo.”

Trent Moser and Tyler Herget notched career-high performances on Senior Night, with Moser racking up 26 kills and Herget 63 assists. Moser had 10 kills in the third set and recorded a .452 hitting clip. Additionally, liber Jackson Fife recorded four digs as Cole Hauser added an ace. Trevor Herget posted a career-high 14 kills. Teilon-Jonathan Tufuga recorded two aces, putting him at 40 this season. He’s one of only 12 players in program history to reach 40 aces in a single season.

The Trojans kept momentum from its fourth set win and went on a 4-1 run to go up 7-3 in Set 5. and force a Cougar timeout. BYU went on a 3-0 run, highlighted by a pair of Oldani kills, to get back into the set. Another Tufuga ace tied the game at eight, but then three straight Trojan points took the set to 12-10. USC kept its advantage and reached set point on a Cougar error. The Cougars held them once, but a BYU serving error won the Trojans the set and match, 15-12.

On Friday, the Cougars pulled off a 3-1 (25-23, 20-25, 30-28, 25-18) behind 18 kills by Connor Oldani and 16 from Moser.

BYU will head to UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles, Calif. on Apr. 16 and 18 for its final duo of matches in the regular season, facing the No. 1 Bruins. The matches will be streamed live on B1G+.

Softball takes series sweep with Houston

BYU softball clinched a series sweep over Houston with a 10-9 win at Gail Miller Field on Saturday afternoon.

In a high-scoring series, BYU (14-26, 5-10 Big 12) totaled 33 runs across the three games. On Saturday, the Cougars in blue recorded seven hits from six batters, with  Rita Tavita  going 2-for-4 at the plate. Ilove’a Brittingham also notched a season-high three runs, bringing her total to six across the series. Rita Tavita and Hailey Shuler both drove in a pair of runs for BYU and Jada Villegas got the win, going 3.1 innings and striking out three.

After a 20-minute lightning delay pushed back the first pitch, Houston hit two home runs in its first three batters to take an early lead.

BYU broke things open in a busy bottom of the second, batting through its lineup. The rally was sparked by Brittingham’s home run — her 10th of the season and third in two games — before the Cougars evened the score on  Tristen Turlington’s RBI single down the left field line, scoring Tavita from second.

The Cougars continue their homestand next week, beginning with a Tuesday morning game against Utah Tech on ESPN+.
