Former Syracuse forward Tyler Betsey (5) has signed to play for the BYU men's basketball team in 2026-27.

For Kevin Young’s offense to work, he needs shooters.

Correction … he needs makers.

Anybody can shoot 3-pointers. Making them is another level of skill.

Last season, BYU made 34.5% from the 3-point line, down from 36.8% from the year before. A little more than two percentage points might not seem like a lot, but every little thing is significant in the difference between winning and losing.

Consider this: 34.5% was 156th in the country this year. If BYU shot as well as it did last season, the 36.8% mark would have ranked near the top 30.

As Young builds his roster for the next season, he’s looking for shot makers.

Former four-star recruit Tyler Betsey may be just the guy.

Young announced on Tuesday that Betsey has officially signed with the Cougars.

“We are excited to have Tyler join us at BYU,” Young said. “We have put a focus on shooting this offseason, and he fits that profile after shooting 41 percent from three last season. At 6-foot-8, he has the ability to guard multiple positions. His ability to stretch the floor, along with his versatility and potential on the defensive end, make him a great fit.”

The native of Windsor, Conn. has appeared in 65 games during his collegiate career that includes stops at Syracuse and Cincinnati. He averages 4.9 points per game and shoots 37.3 percent from 3-point range on 3.1 attempts per contest.

During his sophomore season at Syracuse, Betsey appeared in 31 games, averaging 6.7 points per game while shooting 40.5 percent from the field, 40.7 percent from three and 63.6 percent from the free throw line.

He scored in double figures nine times, highlighted by a career-high 18-point performance against Florida State. He knocked down multiple 3-pointers 12 times, including a 6-of-9 outing from behind the arc in Syracuse’s 94-86 win over the Seminoles.

Betsey began his collegiate career at Cincinnati, appearing in 34 games in 2023-24 where he scored 113 points with 50 rebounds, 10 assists, five blocks and a steal. He scored a season-high nine points in a win over Grambling, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers.

The 6-foot-8 forward was a two-time Connecticut Gatorade Player of the Year at St. Thomas Moore. The former four-star recruit averaged 23.1 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game as a senior, and scored a career-high 40 points in a win over John Abbott College. He averaged 23.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game as a junior, leading the Chancellors to a berth in the NEPSAC Class AAA Championship game.

The transfer portal closes on Wednesday at midnight and BYU has three or four more roster spots yet to fill. Young and his staff are looking for some post players — those guys are at a premium this offseason — and even more 3-point shooting to surround what will be the centerpiece of the offense in guard Robert Wright III. Wright initially entered the transfer portal and made a visit to Kentucky before deciding to return to Provo for his junior year. Last season, Wright averaged 18.1 points and 4.6 assists per game.

BYU has also mined the transfer portal for former Kentucky guard Collin Chandler and former Utah and Clemson forward Jake Wahlin. Both Chandler and Wahlin signed with the Cougars out of high school but opted to go elsewhere.

Another former BYU commit, Chamberlain Burgess, committed to Weber State on Tuesday. The 6-foot-10 Burgess finished his high school career at Orem and played last season at Snow College.
