The BYU baseball team won two of three games at Arizona on April 24-26, 2026, taking Game 3 8-4 to claim the series

TUCSON, Arizona — BYU defeated Arizona 8-4 Saturday afternoon at Hi Corbett Field to win the three-game series 2-1. The Cougars have now won four Big 12 series and are currently in sixth place in the conference standings.

BYU (22-20, 11-10) scored eight runs on 12 hits with two errors, while Arizona (16-26, 7-14) had four runs on 10 hits, with no errors. Cougar hurlers Cayson Bell, Nate Gray and Ashton Johnson combined to scatter 10 hits with six strikeouts for the win.

BYU lost the opener on Thursday 6-0 but responded with a 5-1 win Saturday to even the series as Garrison Sumner went 6 2/3 innings, allowing just one run while striking out seven.

On Saturday, Ryder Robinson and Easton Jones had two hits apiece and Tua Wolfgramm drove in a pair of runs. The Cougars got another strong starting performance on the mound, this one from Bell. The sophomore right-hander went 4 2/3 innings and allowed two runs while striking out three. Ashton Johnson went 1 2/3 innings for the save.

BYU got off to a hot start with three runs in the top of the first inning off Arizona’s starter Smith Bailey, the reigning NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week. Luke Anderson singled to leadoff the game, and moved to second on a walk by Robinson. A single from Jones scored Anderson and advanced Robinson to third, where he scored on a wild pitch. Jones then moved to third on a single by Bryker Hurdsman and scored on a single from Wolfgramm for a 3-0 lead.

Arizona got on the board in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run Caleb Danzeisen home run to cut the BYU lead to 5-2.

The Cougars answered with two more runs in the sixth to push the lead back to five. Back-to-back singles by Matt Hansen and Ridge Erickson, followed by an Ezra McNaughton walk, loaded the bases with one out. Robinson then picked up an RBI being hit by a pitch and Jones walked to bring home Erickson for a 7-2 advantage.

The Wildcats got a run back in the bottom half of the sixth on a walk and two singles to make the score 7-3. After a scoreless seventh, UA picked up another run in the eighth with two singles and a sacrifice fly to close the gap to 7-4.

BYU responded with an insurance run in the top of the ninth. Johnson held UA scoreless in the bottom half of the frame for an 8-4 win and his fourth save of the year. Gray, who came on in relief of Bell with two outs in the fifth, went 2.2 innings for the win, his Big 12-leading seventh win of the year.

BYU will travel north to Phoenix to face Grand Canyon in a non-conference game on Monday, April 27 at 1 p.m. MT at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark. The game will be broadcast live on the MW Network and on the BYU Radio app, BYUradio.org, SiriusXM 143 and 107.9 FM in Utah County.

Men’s volleyball shut out of NCAA Tournament

Despite spending the entire season in the AVCA Top 10, the No. 8 BYU men’s volleyball team will have to watch the 2026 NCAA Tournament from the sideline.

The Cougars (21-12) hosted the MPSF Tournament but lost to top-ranked UCLA 3-1 in the semifinals. The Bruins went on to beat USC 3-1 in the final on Saturday to earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA’s. UCLA (29-1) is the top seed in the NCAA Tournament with Hawaii (27-5) No. 2, Long Beach State (24-4) No. 3 and Ball State (24-4) No. 4.

The Cougars were under consideration for one of the five at-large spots but they went to Hawaii, Loyola Chicago (20-8), Pepperdine (23-6), USC (19-7) and UC-Irvine (18-8).

The tournament begins Friday in the regional round, with the Final Four at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles on May 9.

Softball avoids sweep with Game 3 win at Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — BYU softball took Game 3 at Utah, 5-3, at Dumke Stadium on Saturday night.

The Cougars (18-30, 7-14 Big 12) put up two runs in the second and three more in the fifth. Starter Hailey Shuler went the distance in the win, her third complete game of the year, while also going 1-for-4 at the plate with an RBI double.

Ilove’a Brittingham had two hits and drove in two runs and Lily Owens contributed two hits, including a double.

BYU struck first, scoring two in the top of the third on consecutive base hits by Danica Acosta and Owens before a Brittingham double to the right center gap.

The Cougars added a trio of insurance runs in the fifth, doing all of their damage with two outs. Three doubles and a single ensued, coming off the bats of Owens, Shuler, Brittingham and Maddie Udall-Woolley to give BYU a 5-0 lead.

Shuler, who allowed just two hits through four frames, worked around a leadoff walk in the bottom of the inning as Acosta doubled off the Utes, also wrapping up the inning with a groundout a pitch later.

Utah picked up a sacrifice fly to center field after a one-out triple in the bottom of the seventh and had two runners on with two outs, but grounded into a fielder’s choice to end the game, 5-1.

The Cougars will return home to host No. 24 Arizona State in their final Big 12 series of the year. The three-game set will begin on Thursday, April 30 at 6 p.m. MT on ESPN+.
