BYU’s Halladay-Lowry defends steeplechase title at USATF

(Courtesy BYU Athletics)NEW YORK CITY – BYU alumna Lexy Halladay-Lowry won the USATF outdoor 3000-meter steeplechase title as Lexi Goff-Thompson and Karrie Baloga recorded top 10 performances in BYU history in the event Saturday at Icahn Stadium during the USATF Outdoor Championships.
Halladay-Lowry defended her USATF 3000m steeplechase title, clocking a season best 9:12.54 to defeat the field by nearly five seconds. The former Cougar was joined in the race by fellow alumna and current Nike Swoosh TC teammate Courtney Wayment and current BYU athletes Lexi Goff-Thompson and Karrie Baloga.
Wayment finished fifth in 9:19.90, while Goff-Thompson and Baloga placed 11th and 15th, respectively. Both earned spots on BYU’s all-time top 10 list, with Goff-Thompson ranking No. 8 in 9:48.16 and Baloga No. 10 in 9:55.44. Former Cougar Emma Gee also competed, finishing 10th in 9:47.13.
James Corrigan claimed a seventh place finish in the men’s 3000-meter steeplechase final. The junior finished in a season-best 8:21.05 to earn a spot on the podium. The BYU school record holder in the event, who competed at the 2024 Summer Olympics representing the United States of America in the steeplechase, advanced to the final round after finishing 13th in the first round on Thursday, clocking in at 8:32.20.
Carter Cutting placed 12th in the men’s 1500m final Saturday in a time of 3:51.65. The junior, who holds the BYU school record in the event, advanced to the final after taking third overall in the first round Thursday coming across in 3:41.59.
BYU alumnus Kenneth Rooks competed alongside Corrigan in the 3000m steeplechase Thursday taking 20th and finishing in 8:46.26.
