BYU Roundup: Women’s indoor track finishes second at Big 12 Championships

The Cougars totaled 110 points, just behind Texas Tech’s 114.5. It marked BYU’s highest point total at the indoor championship since joining the Big 12. Oklahoma State took third with 97 points.
The 4x400m squad of Paje Rasmussen, Marianne Barber, Kali McEuen and Sami Oblad won the conference title, just shy of its personal best. The quartet was led off by Rasmussen, who opened with a 53.98 split. Barber followed with a 52.45 that would have been a career best in the open 400 meters. McEuen ran third and moved into third place with a 53.86. Nearly two seconds behind Texas Tech on the handoff, Oblad surged ahead late, passing the Red Raiders in 51.13 to anchor the lineup to the win.
Hedengren won the 3000m by nearly 10 seconds, setting a facility record in 8:46.11. She closed in 32.38 for her first conference title in the event.
Chamberlain won the 800m in 2:06.21 for her second Big 12 title. The senior pulled ahead at 600m to take the lead from Iowa State’s Makayla Clark. Sophomore Tessa Buswell finished third in 2:06.97, just three-thousandths of a second behind Clark. Chamberlain and Buswell combined for 16 points.
Chamberlain added a runner-up finish in the 3000m, placing second in 8:56.28 behind Oklahoma State’s Isca Chelangat. She moved up seven spots over the final half of the race.
Hedengren finished runner-up in the mile in 4:24.33. The freshman led until the final 100m, when Oklahoma State’s Billah Jepkiuri moved ahead. Hedengren finished more than 10 seconds ahead of the rest of the field to earn eight points.
Thompson, Cutting claim individual titles at Big 12 Championships
LUBBOCK, Texas – Creed Thompson was crowned champion of the 3000-meter, teammate Carter Cutting won the mile on the second day of the Big 12 Indoor Championships Saturday afternoon.
Jaden Roskelley finished on the podium in the Heptathlon scoring 5546 points to take sixth. Kaden Passey finished 14th with a personal-best score of 5184 points after taking first in the heptathlon 1000-meter where he crossed the line in 2:37.27. He also recorded a person-best 4.45m/14-7.25 in the heptathlon pole vault where he finished 11th.
Jonah Heimuli, who alongside Cutting secured victory in the DMR Friday afternoon, took fourth overall in the 600-yard dash in a personal best time of 1:08.96..
The men finished fifth as a team scoring 57 points overall. Texas Tech won the meet with 125 points and Kansas State, Iowa State and Oklahoma State all finished ahead of the Cougars.
On Friday, the distance medley relay squad won the Big 12 title.
Baseball edged out by Long Beach State
LONG BEACH, California — BYU dropped the final game of a four-game, round-robin series on Saturday, falling to host Long Beach State, 7-6. The Cougars wrapped up the weekend series going 2-2 with wins over Washington State, while losing two games to the Dirtbags at Blair Field in Long Beach, California.
Long Beach (4-6) scored seven runs on 10 hits while stranding 13 runners. Meanwhile BYU (6-5) scored six runs on nine hits, leaving seven on base. Ezra McNaughton drove in two runs with a homer, Ryder Robinson was 3 for 5 and scored two run and Easton Jones finished 2 for 2 with an RBI and a double.
The Cougars trailed by one and got a runner on in the ninth, but Long Beach State closer Kaimi Kahalekai got the final three outs for the save.
Following 11 straight road games in Kentucky and California, BYU returns home to open the 2026 home season with a three-game series versus Cal Baptist at Miller Park, March 5-7.
No. 6 men’s volleyball swept at No. 3 Hawaii
HONOLULU, Hawai’i — No. 6 BYU men’s volleyball fell to 13-4 this season after a second loss to No. 3 Hawai’i this week.
It was the first time the Cougars have lost in three sets this season, with all four losses this season coming to the No. 3 and No. 4 teams in the nation.
Trevor Herget led the Cougars offensively with 10 kills after registering a career-high 12 kills in Wednesday’s match. Connor Oldani added nine kills for BYU and AJ Cottle led BYU with five total blocks. BYU hit just .183 in the match, compared to .446 for Hawai’i.
The Cougars will play two matches in California this week against UC Merced on Friday and Jessup on Saturday.
Softball tallies split in California tournament
FULLERTON, Calif. — BYU softball beat LMU 5-4 after falling to No. 8/9 UCLA 13-8 in a Judi Garman Classic Saturday afternoon doubleheader at Anderson Family Field.
The Cougars used a four-run fifth inning to take the lead and hung on late in their win over the Lions.
Maddie Udall-Woolley was 3 for 3 with 2 RBI, Lily Owens was 2 for 4 with a home run and Hailey Shuler evened her record at 2-2 by pitching a complete game with seven strikeouts.
In the loss to UCLA, Ilove’a Brittingham homered twice, but the Cougars couldn’t keep up with the Brittingham finished 3 for 4 with five RBI, Danica Acosta was 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI and Owens was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and a double.
BYU (5-14 overall) will begin Big 12 play this week, visiting No. 14 Arizona in Tucson for a three-game series beginning on Thursday, Mar. 5 at 6 p.m. MST.
Men’s swimming takes fifth at Big 12 meet
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The 2026 Big 12 Championships concluded Saturday, with BYU finishing fifth at 843 points.
“The Big 12 brought exactly the level of competition we expected, and our team rose to that challenge with grit and determination,” head coach Tamber McAllister said. “Our athletes showed real progress and gave us every reason to believe we’re building a group that can compete at a high level in this conference. Tanner (Edwards) earning his spot at NCAAs highlights the talent and upward trajectory within this program, and it’s just one example of the good things already taking shape. We’re growing, we’re improving and we’re hungry for more.”
BYU saw four new top-10 school records set on the final day of competition. Jack Burke finished the 200 backstroke at 1:46.91, the 10th-fastest performance in school history. Tyler Edlefsen earned the sixth-fastest time in BYU 200 breaststroke history, finishing the event at 1:56.09. Peter Etzold claimed the fourth-best finish in the 200 breaststroke at 1:55.36, and Easton Mousser topped off the records with a time of 15:04.55 in the 1,650 freestyle, the second-fastest performance in program history.
The women’s team took eighth in their competition, wrapping up the weeklong meet with 524 points.
Two new top-10 BYU records were set on the final day of competition, with Lily Flint earning the eighth-fastest 100 freestyle time in program history at 49.85 and Cher Patrick claiming the seventh-best 1,650 freestyle performance in school history at 16:52.54.
