BYU Roundup: No. 6 men’s volleyball wins two on the road

ROCKLIN, Calif. — Despite dropping the opening set, No. 6 BYU men’s volleyball rallied for a 3-1 (23-25, 25-16, 25-20, 25-16) victory over Jessup Saturday night. The Cougars also swept UC Merced on Friday.

Against Jessup, Trent Moser led the BYU attack with 12 kills, hitting .474. Teilon-Jonathan Tufuga added 11 kills and Connor Oldani had nine. Gavin Chambers contributed four total blocks, Oldani three and Tufuga two. Both Tyler Herget and Jackson Fife registered season-highs with 10 digs apiece.

Jessup jumped out to the 15-11 lead in the first set. The Cougars chipped away and tied things up at 21-21 late in the set after a Jessup attack error but the Warriors, who hit .355, finished the set on a 4-2 run to take the 25-23 win.

The BYU defense took over from there, holding Jessup to .000, -.048 and -.087 hitting percentages in the next three sets.

Kills from Moser, Tufuga and Oldani helped BYU get up to a five-point lead at 17-12 in Set 2. The Cougars ended the set on an 8-4 run to take win handedly 25-16, hit .571.

The Cougars went up 5-1 in the third set of a Tufuga ace. Jessup rallied with an 8-2 run to go up 9-7 but BYU battled back and eventually went up by five at 19-14 on an AJ Cottle kill. Oldani finished the with an attack to make it a 25-20 BYU win.

Neither team held more than a one-point lead in the fourth set until BYU went up 7-5 on a Tufuga kill. The Warriors wouldn’t get closer than those two points the rest of the match, with BYU going up 14-8 on a triple block from Oldani, Moser and Chambers. The Cougars finishing things up at 25-16.

On Friday, eight players registered at least three kills in a 25-19, 25-12, 25-13 sweep of UC Merced, led by freshman Tennison Lighthall with a career-high seven kills (.875). Tyler Herget added a season-best three of BYU’s nine aces.

BYU (15-4 overall, 2-0 MPSF) heads back to California for two more conference matches against No. 18 Stanford beginning Friday.

Baseball swept by Cal Baptist

BYU baseball fell to Cal Baptist 11-7 in the final game of a three-game series on Saturday afternoon at Miller Park.

The Lancers (14-3) put up 10 unanswered runs in innings three through five after the Cougars (6-8) took a 3-0 lead in the second. BYU put up four runs in the fifth, but was unable to cut the deficit any further

The Cougars tallied 13 hits in the seven-run effort, which included four hits from Bryker Hurdsman, including a three-run shot over the centerfield wall. Cal Baptist had 14 hits that led to its 11 runs.

Luke Anderson drove in the first runs of the game in the second inning with a bases clearing three-run triple to right after the Lancer right fielder failed to come up with a diving catch. The drive scored Matt Hansen, Hurdsman and Cooper Jones to put the Cougars up 3-0.

Cal Baptist countered in the third inning with a three-run blast by Bryce McFeely scraping over the left-center field wall to tie the game at 3-3.

The Lancers plate four runs on four hits to take a 7-3 lead in the top of the fourth, including two Cal Baptist runs that came on wild pitches.

The Cougars failed to muster up a ninth inning comeback as the contest came to a close with an 11-7 Cal Baptist win.

The Lancers also won Game 1 (13-11) and Game 2 (14-7). For the series, Cal Baptist totaled 50 hits, 36 runs and nine home runs against BYU pitching.

The Cougars (6-8) will be back at Miller Park for an interstate matchup against Utah Tech on Tuesday, March 10 at 3 p.m. MST. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and will also be available on BYUradio.org and on the BYU Radio app.

Softball dominated by No. 13 Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. — BYU softball fell in Game 3 of its initial Big 12 series at No. 13 Arizona, 16-3 in five innings at Hillenbrand Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats run-ruled the Cougars in all three games, winning 13-1 in five innings on Thursday and 8-0 in five innings on Friday.

The Cougars took a 2-0 led in Game 3 on an Ilove’a Brittingham home run, but surrendered 11 unanswered runs to the Wildcats.

Hailey Shuler reached on an Arizona throwing error in the top of the first and Brittingham lined a homer over the right field wall for the quick 2-0 advantage.

The Wildcats, in similar fashion to the series’ first two games, answered right back, batting through the order in their half of the first to score five runs on four hits and one Cougar error to go ahead 5-2.

Ballooning its advantage in the bottom of the second, Arizona went in front 11-2 after plating six runs on four hits, two wild pitches and a passed ball.

After a scoreless third, BYU plated one in the fourth on a Rita Tavita double to go along with singles from  Hailey Morrow and Bre Townsend.

The Wildcats answered once more, batting through their order and putting up five more runs on four hits, two walks and one Cougar error.

BYU put two on in the fifth, but a fielder’s choice, swinging strikeout and line out ended the game via the run-rule, 16-3.

The Cougars (5-17 overall, 0-3 Big 12) will return to Provo for their home opener against Abilene Christian on Tuesday, Mar. 10 at 4 p.m. MT on ESP
