BYU's Carter Cutting broke a school record in the 1,500 meters at the Robison Invitational in Provo on Thursday, April 30, 2026.

Carter Cutting broke the 36 year old 1500-meter facility record by two seconds Thursday afternoon at the Robison Invitational at Clarence F. Robison Track and Field Complex.

The junior finished in 3:40.20 taking first overall in the event. Cutting, the reigning indoor national champion in the mile, finished seven seconds ahead of the rest of the pack after pulling away late in the race.

“All glory to God,” Cutting said of his record breaking performance. “The weather was good and I felt really good. Shoutout to my pacer  Brayden Packard for setting me up for a strong finish. Records are meant to be broken so it’s really special to claim a record that’s stood for so long.”

The previous facility record of 3:42.1 was set by S. Kip Cheruiyot of Mt. Saint Mary’s in 1989 at the NCAA national championships held at the Clarence F. Robison Track and Field Complex just under 37 years ago. Cutting now adds a facility record to his resume that already includes a school record and a national championship.

James Corrigan made his outdoor debut in the 3000-meter steeplechase Thursday finishing third overall in a time of 8:55.10. The senior and Olympian was only beaten in the race by former BYU athlete and silver medalist in the event Kenneth Rooks who took second and Daniel Michalski who broke the 43-year old facility record in the event to take first overall in a time of 8:39.64. Both Michalski and Rooks are professional athletes with ties to BYU track and field director Ed Eyestone.

Garrett Copelin claimed victory in the 110-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 14.08 seconds with Jayden Jessee finishing in a close second at 14.22 seconds. Ty Oustrich won the open 200-meter dash coming across the line in 21.59. Jessee competed in the long jump, recording a jump of 7.31m/24-0 to take second in the event.

Hayden Gribble and Connor Saunders tied for second in the high jump recording a height of 2.05m/6-8.75.

Multi-athlete Kaden Passey took first in the decathlon discus throw with a mark of 46.69m/153-2.5. He also finished fifth in the 110m hurdles in 15.93 seconds and third in the decathlon pole vault clearing 4.29m/14-1.25.
