BYU Roundup: Men’s track team on deck for NCAA West Regionals

BYU will compete in the NCAA Outdoor West Regionals in Fayetteville, Ark., beginning on Wednesday, May 27, 2026.

BYU men’s track and field prepares for the NCAA Outdoor West Regionals at John McDonnell Field in Fayetteville, Arkansas May 27-30.

The Cougars earned 26 entries including four or more in the 3000-meter steeplechase, 5000-meter, 10,000-meter and the 400-meter hurdles. The men will compete on Wednesday, May 27 and Friday, May 29.

Carson Riner and Brinton Paulson will lead off for the Cougars in the early afternoon Wednesday in the javelin throw. The pair entered the regional meet ranked 20th and 36th. Riner finished fourth at the Big 12 Championships in the event while Paulson finished ninth.

On the track, Garrett Copelin will make an appearance in the 110-meter hurdles after qualifying for the regional meet with a 13.75 second performance at the Big 12 Championships ranked him 30th. The sophomore will also compete in the 400-meter hurdles alongside Brayden Dahl,  Jayden Jessee, Treyton Anderson and Logan Hubler.

Carter Cutting will headline the 1500-meter for BYU joined by teammates Tayvon Kitchen and Isaac Hedengren in the event. Cutting is ranked fourth in the west in the event with his 3:40.20 performance at the Robison Invitational. The junior is also expected to appear in the 800-meter alongside Brayden Packard Wednesday evening.

Silas Zimmerman qualified for the meet in the pole vault in his first collegiate season entering the meet ranked 43rd after clearing 5.23m/17-1.75 at the Pacific Coast Invitational earlier this season.

Creed Thompson is expected to lead BYU in the 10,000-meter on Wednesday night after winning the Big 12 Championship in the event just two weeks earlier. The senior will compete alongside his brother Davin Thompson, Hunter Kitchen and Dalton Mortensen.

The Cougars will pick back up on Friday, May 29 with Mark Bryant in the discus. The freshman enters the meet ranked 22nd in the event after his 58.08m/190-7 mark at the Big 12 Championships placed him second overall.

Hedengren will once again appear on the track, this time in the 3000-meter steeplechase, joined by Olympian James Corrigan, Garrett Stanford, Max Davis and Jefferson McMullin. Hedengren is ranked 11th in the event in the west with Corrigan sitting at No. 27.

The 5000-meter will feature Tayvon Kitchen who is ranked fifth nationally in the event and holds the BYU school record at 13:16.27 set earlier this season at the Bryan Clay Invitational. The true freshman will compete alongside teammates Creed Thompson, Hedengren, Jenkins and Hunter Kitchen.

The Cougars will then end competition at the meet with the 4×400-meter relay that currently ranks ninth in the west.

Uluava makes Lott Trophy list

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.  — BYU linebacker  Cade Uluave  has been named a candidate for the 2026 Lott IMPACT Trophy, which recognizes the top defensive player nationally who has had the biggest impact on his team both on and off the field.

The Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List was announced at a luncheon held May 20 at The Pacific Club in Newport Beach, California. Uluave is one of nine linebackers recognized on the preseason list, with 17 defensive backs and 16 defensive linemen also making the 42-player watch list.

Named after former NFL Hall of Fame star Ronnie Lott, The Lott Trophy recognizes the Defensive Player of the Year who demonstrates the greatest IMPACT, which is defined as Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity–all characteristics exhibited by Lott during his illustrious playing career.

The annual winner is selected by a national voter panel, consisting of former winners, members of the media, coaches, and members of the Board of Directors of The IMPACT Foundation. The winner will be announced at a gala black-tie event at The Pacific Club on December 9, 2026.

A 6-foot-1, 235-pound senior from South Jordan, Utah, Uluave is in his first year at BYU after transferring from Cal. A 2025 All-ACC First-Team linebacker, Uluave played in 34 games for the Bears over three seasons, starting 26 games. He led Cal with 100 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and 5 quarterback hurries last year while amassing 237 career tackles, 21.5 TFL, 6 sacks, 3 interceptions and 2 forced fumbles in three seasons at Cal.

In addition to earning first-team all-conference honors in 2025, Uluave received All-ACC honorable mention in 2024 and was a first-team Freshman All-American selection (The Athletic, FWAA, College Football News) in 2023, when he was also named the Pac-12 Defensive Freshman of the Year, Super West Sports Defensive Freshman of the Year and a Phil Steele All-Pac-12 Third Team honoree.

Uluave prepped at Mountain Ridge High School in Herriman, Utah, where he was a two-way player. On defense, he registered 154 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 5 sacks, 4 forced fumbles and 2 fumble recoveries, returning one for a touchdown. On offense, he rushed for 1,638 yards and 26 touchdowns on 290 carries, and made 20 catches for 164 yards and one touchdown. He also also participated in baseball as well as track and field and earned the Utah Chapter of the National Football Foundation’s Scholar-Athlete Award during his 2021-22 junior academic year.

Jones earns Big 12 All-Tournament team nod

SURPRISE, Arizona  — BYU third baseman Easton Jones was named to the All-Tournament Team of the 2026 Big 12 Baseball Tournament presented by Allstate.

The senior from American Fork, Utah, wrapped up the final two games of his BYU career at the Tournament in Surprise, Arizona, going 3-for-6 (.500) with two home runs and a triple, to go along with four walks. Jones led the Cougars with five RBI and scored four runs with an on-base percentage of .700, while slugging 1.833 over two games. He led No. 9 seed BYU to a 18-8, seven-inning win over No. 12 seed Texas Tech in the opening game of the tournament, before the Cougars dropped the second game to No. 8 seed Baylor, 13-9.

Game two of the Big 12 tournament was the 172nd start of Jones’ career, tying him for 17th all-time at BYU. It was also his 183rd game as a Cougar, good for 24th all-time. Jones concluded his four years at BYU with 33 career home runs, which tied the 26th highest total by a Cougar. In addition, he had 38 doubles, five triples, 119 RBI and scored 108 runs with a slugging percentage of .478 during his four years at BYU from 2023-26.

Jones will graduate from BYU in June with a degree in exercise and wellness.
