BYU gave up a goal on a defensive mistake less than a minute into Friday night’s showdown with No. 8 Texas Tech.

The Cougars spent the rest of the match making up for it.

Behind the first career brace from senior Mattyn Summers-Oviatt, No. 22 BYU upset Texas Tech 3-2 at South Field Friday night.

“It was such a gritty performance from the girls tonight,” said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. “It’s tough when you start out a game like that. Sometimes you just have to have each other’s backs. It was a little sketchy at first, but we found a way. We went into the half with momentum. It was a really great performance, and we made it really exciting for the fans.”

This was the second straight come-from-behind win by BYU against Texas Tech, with the last being a 2-1 win in 2024. Although BYU was outshot by the visitors, the Cougars scored the most goals on the Red Raiders this season.

Summers-Oviatt scored one goal in each half, bringing her total tally to four this season. Friday night also marked junior Mika Krommenhoek’s first game of the season with multiple assists and freshman Sydney Snow’s first career assist.

Texas Tech started the game off quickly, scoring the first goal of the night after 46 seconds of gameplay. The Red Raiders capitalized on a miscue by BYU’s goalkeeper Paiton Collins, tapping the ball in the bottom left corner of the goal.

The first corner kick of the game was also given to the visitors, but didn’t lead to much after BYU was awarded a free kick after Texas Tech’s handball.

Krommenhoek had the Cougar’s first shot on goal in the sixth minute of the half, but missed wide and to the left. Despite BYU’s attempt, the momentum went back to the Red Raiders. After multiple unsuccessful and off target shots by Texas Tech, Collins slid to save what would have been another visitor goal in the 15th minute.

Not long after, on the other end of the field, sophomore Mia Goettsche tied the score and gave the Cougars their first point of the night, tapping it in with her right foot after a cross from Krommenhoek and an assist from junior Emma Hamberlin.

BYU maintained control of the ball, with Sophie Sivulich and Afton Perry each having a shot on goal in the minutes that followed.

Although a foul by Lucy Kesler gave Texas Tech good positioning on a free kick, their shot soared out the back end of the field. The Red Raiders then gained some energy with two shots on goal towards the end of the half.

With one minute left in the first half, BYU’s Presley Freeman drove the ball up the left side of the field, Sydney snow sent a shot across the net and Summers-Oviatt finished the job, heading the ball into the back right side of the net and bringing the score to 2-1.

This was only the second time this season that Texas Tech had gone into halftime behind.

The Cougars came into the second half strong with three shots on goal within the first six minutes, two wide and one saved by Texas Tech’s keeper.

The Red Raiders (9-1-4, 5-1-1) had a shot on goal, but it was deflected by Collins. A keeper save was then awarded to the visitors’ goalkeeper, after Freeman had two back-to-back hard-driven shots at the goal.

In the 56th minute of the game, BYU extended its lead over Texas Tech, with Summers-Oviatt sending the ball to the back right of the net, assisted by Krommenhoek, putting the score to 3-1.

The Red Raiders weren’t ready to give up, as they continued to put pressure on the Cougars with a corner kick and a head shot on goal that went out of bounds. Although it had to be reviewed by the official, in the 70th minute, the visitors narrowed the gap to 3-2 by putting the ball in the top center of the goal.

Back and forth possession followed, with Kyleigh Hastings and Goettsche each keeping Texas Tech on its toes with shots on goal.

A free kick was awarded to the Red Raiders in the 83rd minute after a BYU handball right outside of the box. Avery Frischknecht took the fired shot into the chest, blocking the opponent’s chance at another goal.

Each team traded possession and momentum towards the end of this aggressive match totaling 19 fouls. The women had multiple shots on goal before the 90th minute hit and the Cougars secured the win at 3-2.

BYU (9-3-2 overall, 5-1-1 Big 12) travels to Kansas for another Big 12 matchup on Oct. 22. The game is set to start at 5:00 p.m. MDT and will be streamed on ESPN+.

Starting at $4.32/week.
