BYU players celebrate after scoring a goal during the Big 12 game against Texas Tech at South Field in Provo on Friday, Oct. 16, 2026.

BYU women’s soccer gave up a goal on a defensive mistake less than a minute into Friday night’s showdown with No. 8 Texas Tech.

The Cougars spent the rest of the match making up for it.

Behind the first career brace from senior Mattyn Summers-Oviatt, No. 22 BYU rallied and upset Texas Tech 3-2 at South Field Friday night.

“It was such a gritty performance from the girls tonight,” said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. “It’s tough when you start out a game like that. Sometimes you just have to have each other’s backs. It was a little sketchy at first, but we found a way. We went into the half with momentum. It was a really great performance, and we made it really exciting for the fans.”

This was the second straight come-from-behind win by BYU against Texas Tech, with the last being a 2-1 win in 2024. Although BYU was outshot by the visitors, the Cougars scored the most goals on the Red Raiders this season.

Summers-Oviatt scored one goal in each half, bringing her total tally to four this season. Friday night also marked junior Mika Krommenhoek’s first game of the season with multiple assists and freshman Sydney Snow’s first career assist.

Texas Tech started the game off quickly, scoring the first goal of the night after 46 seconds of gameplay. The Red Raiders capitalized on a miscue by BYU’s goalkeeper Paiton Collins, tapping the ball in the bottom left corner of the goal.

Sophomore Mia Goettsche tied the score and gave the Cougars their first point of the night in the 17th minute, tapping it in with her right foot after a cross from Krommenhoek and an assist from junior Emma Hamberlin.

With one minute left in the first half, BYU’s Presley Freeman drove the ball up the left side of the field, Sydney snow sent a shot across the net and Summers-Oviatt finished the job, heading the ball into the back right side of the net and bringing the score to 2-1.

This was only the second time this season that Texas Tech had gone into halftime behind.

In the 56th minute of the game, BYU extended its lead over Texas Tech, with Summers-Oviatt sending the ball to the back right of the net, assisted by Krommenhoek, putting the score to 3-1.

Texas Tech (9-1-4 overall, 5-1-1 Big 12) got a goal from Taylor Zdrojewski in the 71st minutes but the Cougars held on for the upset.

BYU (9-3-2, 5-1-1) travels to Kansas for another Big 12 matchup on Oct. 22. The match is set to start at 5:00 p.m. MDT and will be streamed on ESPN+.

Women’s cross country wins at Pre-Nationals

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — No. 2 BYU tallied 84 points to secure the win at Pre-Nationals, dominating a head-to-head showdown with No. 1 NC State Friday morning.

Despite trailing behind in second place at both the 2k and 4k splits, the Cougars pulled ahead in the end, clinching the narrow victory with just four points over No. 1 NC State and 129 points over No. 7 Notre Dame.

Although NCAA All-American Jane Hedengren was not featured in the starting lineup for the Cougars, the five scorers for BYU all finished in the top 25. Senior Taylor Rohatinsky made her season debut, leading the team in royal and placing ninth with a 19:33.1 finish.

“I’m so grateful to be on this line with these women,” said Rohatinsky. “What an amazing opportunity to race for each other, but most importantly, God. This sport is a blessing and there’s no one I’d rather do it alongside.”

Not far behind was Taylor Lovell, who moved up by four places from last year’s pre-nationals, finishing in 14th and crossing the line at 19:42.7. Lexi Goff-Thompson and Karrie Baloga came in 18th and 20th, respectively, and Jenna Hutchins rounded out BYU’s top five in 23rd.

BYU also emerged victorious in the white race, tallying an impressive 24 points ahead of NC State’s 32 points, and placing all seven athletes in the top 13. Junior Tessa Buswell used a strong kick over the last 300 meters to move from third to first, passing teammate Macy Wingard and NC State’s Jessica Jazwinski. Buswell crossed the finish line in 20:27.5, beating her personal record by 21 seconds.

The Cougars head to Stillwater, Okla. in two weeks where they hope to defend their title at the Big 12 Championships. The women’s race will begin at 9:00 a.m. MDT.
