OGDEN — Sophomore opposite hitter Anna Blamires recorded a career-high 12 kills as No. 24 BYU women’s volleyball swept Weber State (25-18, 25-16, 25-17) at Swenson Gym on Thursday night.

The Cougars (7-1, 0-0 Big 12) hit .365 in the match while holding the Wildcats to a .171 clip. Despite being out blocked by Weber State (9-7), the Cougars had five aces to the WSU’s none. Both teams had 31 digs.

Blamires’ 12 kills came on a .526 clip. Elli Mortensen joined Blamires in double figures, tallying 10 kills on a match-high .692 hitting percentage.

Kaylie Kofe finished with 20 assists while Alex Bower added 17. Bower and Claire Little Chambers led the way with two service aces each. Lulu Po’uha (nine digs) and Kelli Jo Burgess (seven blocks) both carded match highs as well.

BYU has never lost to Weber State, moving to 67-0 against the Wildcats.

Set 1 was tied at five, a 4-0 BYU run, highlighted by a Little Chambers ace and Burgess-Mortensen double block, forced a Weber State timeout.

The Wildcats drew within three out of the break, but two kills apiece by Mortensen and Blamires made way for Little Chambers’ second ace of the night, forcing WSU’s second timeout at 17-11.

Weber State again drew within three before a Rachel Jepsen quick hitter and two more Blamires kills from the right side helped the Cougars close things out, 25-18.

Trailing to start the second set, three kills by Burgess put BYU in front, 6-4. A 4-0 Cougar run, capped off by a Kofe ace, brought up a Wildcat timeout with BYU leading 12-7.

Kills by Little Chambers, Blamires and Mortensen paced the Cougars to a 17-10 lead at WSU’s second timeout. Consecutive Burgess-Sophia Callahan double blocks made it 20-10, and Blamires wrapped it up with two more kills, 25-15.

After taking the opening point for the first time in the match in Set 3, BYU saw a pair of Burgess-Little Chambers double blocks as well as kills by Mortensen and Jepsen, forcing a Weber State timeout in front 12-5.

Kills from six different Cougars made it 22-12 before a 3-0 Wildcat run made it 24-17, but Mortensen terminated out of the back row to complete the sweep, 25-17.

BYU heads back to Provo for a matchup with Utah State on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 1 p.m. MDT on ESPN+.

Utah State drops UVU volleyball in four sets

LOGAN — Utah State University defeated Utah Valley University, 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-18), on Thursday night inside the Wayne Estes Center.

USU (1-8) was led by former Wolverine Sami Blackett, who finished with 20 kills in the match, while Addy Cook added 18. UVU (2-9) was led by Miley Thunstrom, who had 14 kills in the match for the Wolverines. Evalyn Medarisfinished with 31 assists and eight digs in the match, with eight kills from Alyvia Watkinsfor the Wolverines. Brielle Rueckert finished with seven kills.

Lani Toutai stepped to the service line with the Wolverines trailing 11-10 in the first set, then tied it on a service ace after a UVU challenge overturned the original call. The Wolverines went on a 5-0 run to extend their lead to 16-11, with Thunstrom adding a pair of kills, including one she dropped into the opposite court. The run ended with a block assist from Medaris and Rueckert. Utah Valley capitalized on five Utah State service errors in the first set to earn the opening-set win on the road.

The Aggies responded in the second set, hitting .471 with no attack errors to build a 10-6 lead and force Utah Valley to call its first timeout. Utah State extended the lead to 15-8 with a 4-0 run. The Wolverines kept chipping away and got back within four points several times, including after kills from middle blocker Rueckert, who had four kills through the first two sets. Thunstrom led the Wolverines with eight kills through the first two sets.

In the third, the two in-state foes traded blows and were tied at 10-10. A Utah State attack error gave the Wolverines an 11-10 lead. After a 12-12 tie, UVU went on a 3-0 run to take a 15-12 lead, including the 15th point of the set, which came on a long rally between the two sides before Rueckert finished with a kill. USU responded and eventually built a 20-17 lead in the third set. Olivia Gloecknerhad three kills for the Wolverines in the set.

Utah State jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the fourth set and used a 5-0 run to build a 9-2 advantage before Chloe Hansenkilled a ball down the line to make it 9-3. The Wolverines fought back and cut the Aggie lead to 13-8 after Thunstrom recorded three consecutive kills during a 4-0 run, forcing a USU timeout. Utah Valley continued to chip away at the deficit and made it 15-13 before the Aggies used an 8-1 run to pull away and clinch the match.

Utah Valley concludes nonconference action on Saturday with a 3 p.m. MT match against Weber State. The Wolverines open their inaugural Big West schedule on Thursday, Sept. 24, against UC Riverside in Lockhart Arena.
