Boys playoff hoops roundup: Seven Utah Valley teams get wins to reach quarterfinals

Seven Utah Valley squads achieved that objective with wins in the 5A and 6A second-round games on Friday, setting the stage for the final push to win state titles.
Here’s a look at how things played out:
Class 5A second round
No. 12 Springville 63, No. 5 Cedar Valley 62 (OT)
The Red Devils and Aviators battled back and forth in a close, hard-fought contest that needed overtime to decide a winner. In the extra frame, Springville did just enough to hold on, getting the thrilling one-point victory on the road.
The Red Devils were paced by 21 points from Chase Haslem, while Nate Visentin tacked on 16. Cedar Valley had four player in double figures: Jax Allen (17 points), Cole Roberts (12 points), Heath Christensen (12 points) and Ty Christensen (10 points) but came up just short.
No. 14 Orem 56, No. 3 Woods Cross 47
The Tigers may be a young team but they didn’t look intimidated on the road against a high-seeded Wildcat team. Orem seized control in the second quarter and made enough plays down the stretch to get the upset.
Tiger sophomore Chance Dastrup had a huge game, scoring 14 points, making four 3-pointers (including a half-court shot at the end of a quarter) and dishing out nine assists. Trey Hiatt was also in double figures with 10 points while Asher Young had nine points and 11 rebounds.
No. 6 Lehi 72, No. 11 Box Elder 48
There was no doubt that Pioneer head coach Quincy Lewis had his team ready for fast starts as they exploded to key runs to start the second, third and fourth quarters on their way to the comfortable win over the Bees.
Lehi was paced by 17 points from Cooper Lewis, while Grayson Brousseau tacked on 15.
No. 2 Cottonwood 74, No. 15 Payson 53
After playing the Colts tough in both Region 7 games, the Lions simply couldn’t find a way to stay with Cottonwood in the playoffs. The Colts built a big lead early and Payson couldn’t find a way to rally, ending their season.
The Lions got 27 points (including four 3-pointers) from Isaac Wolfe, while Kamika Wesley chipped in 12.
No. 7 Timpview 66, No. 10 Salem Hills 61
The Thunderbirds got a big game from freshman Dean Rueckert to help hold off the Skyhawks.

5A quarterfinal matchups
No. 12 Springville will look to upset No. 4 Alta at 9:30 a.m., No. 7 Timpview takes on No. 2 Cottonwood at 12:50 p.m. and No. 14 Orem will meet No. 6 Lehi at 2:30 p.m.
All games will take place at the Dee Events Center in Ogden on March 1.
Class 6A second round
No. 9 Westlake 73, No. 8 Layton 70 (OT)
Four quarters wasn’t enough to decide a big-time battle between two good teams. The Thunder led by seven points at halftime, only to see the Lancers erase the lead in the third quarter.
After regultion ended tied at 65-65, Westlake managed to make a couple more plays in overtime to survive and advance.
Symon Sua was on target from long range for the Thunder, hitting five 3-pointers on his way to 28 points. Quade Fausett finished with 14 points.
No. 3 American Fork 63, No. 14 Roy 29
It was all about defense for the Cavemen in the first half as they shut down the Royal offense, holding Roy to just eight points. That allowed American Fork to build a huge lead and cruise to the win.
Ten different players scored for the Cavemen, led by 14 points from Blake Rawson and 11 from Keon Webb.
No. 4 Lone Peak 60, No. 13 Pleasant Grove 56
The Knights got hot from beyond in the arc in the second half to overcome a Viking deficit and get the victory.

6A quarterfinal matchups
No. 4 Lone Peak will play No. 12 Davis at 9:30 a.m., No. 9 Westlake faces No. 1 Corner Canyon at 11:10 a.m. and No. 3 American Fork battles No. 6 Fremont at 2:30 p.m.
All games will take place at the Dee Events Center in Ogden on Feb 28.
Class 2A semifinals
No. 8 Parowan 48, No. 5 American Heritage 33
The Rams weren’t the 2A favorites coming in but continued their run to the title by locking down the Patriots in the semi. Parowan held American Heritage to just 10 points in the first half and was able to pull away to get the comfortable win.
The Patriots got 19 points from Ricky Patterson and nine from Niwhai Winitana.
No. 5 American Heritage 70, No. 7 Duchesne 64 (OT)
The Patriots bounced back from their semifinal loss to defeat the Eagles in the 2A third-place game, but it wasn’t easy.
Duchesne took control early, going up by double digits in the first quarter, but American Heritage came all the way back and led in the final seconds before the Eagles got a putback to tie the game at 57-57 and force overtime.
In the extra frame, the Patriots got a key 3-pointer from Weston Larsen with 1:23 left to put his team up for good, then American Heritage closed things out with free throws as it made all 14 attempts.
Ricky Patterson was the big scorer for the Patriots as he poured in 32 points, with Larson adding 17.
