Weekend wrestling was dominated by dual meet tournaments. The 5A and 6A boys dual meet tournaments were hosted by Mountain View and American Fork respectively while Westlake hosted the Utah Girls Dual Meet State Championships.

Girls Wrestling: Westlake prevailed against the competition at the Utah Girls Dual Meet State Championships defeating Uintah in the championship match by criteria after both teams finished tied at 42-42. Both teams posted seven falls but the Thunder prevailed because of scoring more points in the first round.

Winning Westlake wrestlers against the Utes were Ashley Cannon (120 pounds), Ameris Jensen (130), Alissa Laferty (135), Hailey Piig (140), Lizzie Raleigh (155), O’dessa Laititi (190) and Keilikki Nau Rarick (235).

Westlake went 3-0 in its other dual meets beating in order Fremont 58-24, Riverton 66-9, and Northridge 49-30.

Cedar Valley placed seventh and Wasatch 10th out of the 12 teams that sent wrestlers.

Alexia Woods (125/130), AnnaLee Wright (130), and Rhya Balmforth (140) went undefeated for Cedar Valley while Skyridge’s Madi Sherman (125) won all her bouts as an independent wrestler.

While Mountain View was hosting the 5A duals for the boys, they also had a girls competition where competitors were put in pools of four or five wrestlers. Springville earned the highest team score with 211 points while Salem Hills (202.5) and Mountain View (198.5) finished second and third respectively.

One intriguing match-up happened at 105 pounds where there was a rematch of the 100-pound state title match from last year. Last year Payson’s January Langston won the state title but this go around Springville’s Emeri Mortimer earned a win by fall to claim the gold.

Mortimer had several teammates join her as champions as Valery Ethington (120) who knocked off a returning state champion in American Leadership Academy’s Rachel Camacho, along with Karalie Harris (140), Hotaia Valeti (155), and Malorie Stika (170). Valeti knocked off her teammate Hayley Harris to win her title.

Salem Hills had several champions with Hannah Coyne (115), Paisley Nelson (130), Ellie Peterson (135), Jessica Miller (135), Lynnli Nielsen (145), and Jocelyn Hepler (190).

Other champions with local ties were Mountain View’s Ivory Cazier (105), Jasmine Golavar (110), Isla Baeza (135), and Cadynce Stubbs (155). Payson’s Ximena Guzman (125), Provo’s Mele Folaumahina (155) and Timpview’s Taimane Fiatoa (170) all climbed to the top of the podium as well.

In dual meet action last week Uintah whipped Wasatch 60-24, Pleasant Grove edged Riverton 39-36, and Juab mauled Mountain View 54-30.

Boys Wrestling: At the 5A Duals, there were basically two tournaments with a set of teams competing on Friday and another set on Saturday. Mountain View did compete in both tournaments.

Payson stormed the field defeating Lehi 54-18, Mountain View 60-9, Alta 63-9, and Viewmont 69-4 to win the Friday event.

The Payson-Mountain View dual spotlighted two weights where the top two ranked wrestlers squared off against each other. In both cases Payson prevailed. At 144 pounds, returning state champion Colton Theobald defeated Cody Burr, a 2-time state runner-up, 7-0. Then in the next bout at 150 pounds, Kelton Smith’s late takedown against top-ranked Tyler Blevins delivered a 3-2 victory for the Lion grappler.

In another clash of titan wrestlers, Lehi’s Will McCleary (190), a returning state placer from last year, defeated returning state champion Landen Shurtleff of Payson, 9-4.

Lehi and Mountain View both finished Friday’s competition with 4-1 records.

On Saturday Wasatch defeated Northridge 70-8, Hillcrest 71-7, Woods Cross 59-24, Mountain View B team 72-12 and Mountain View’s varsity team 42-29 and claimed the trophy on Saturday. Mountain View was again 4-1 on Saturday.

In the dual meet against Mountain View, Wasp freshman Daxton Bonner (120) scored an impressive victory over returning Bruin state placer Glade Harman, 8-3.

Westlake narrowly missed out winning the 6A Duals going 8-1 over last weekend in its dual meets. The Thunder lost to Mountain Ridge on a tiebreaker after both teams finished with a tied score 33-33. A long list of criteria is available to break the tie and it went down the list quite a bit before the Sentinels were granted the victory due to less penalty points in the match.

Two groups or pools were used and Mountain Ridge and Westlake finished one-two in the A pool while American Fork went 7-0 to win Pool B and also won a dual via a tiebreaker with Fremont after the match ended 35-35. American Fork won because of more technical falls where one was delivered by Tege Kelley at 132 pounds. Aaron Hansen (285) won the dual’s final bout to force the tie-breaking situation where the Caveman prevailed.

Then in the Gold pool both Mountain Ridge and Westlake won against American Fork and Fremont respectively. Then Westlake ended up second defeating American Fork 52-18 while Mountain Ridge clinched the gold trophy with its victory over Fremont.

Lone Peak placed second in the Silver Pool (6th place overall) while Pleasant Grove (who competed with its JV team) finished second in the Bronze pool while Skyridge was third.

The following wrestlers went undefeated at the 6A Duals (at least five matches): Lone Peak: Corbin Baumgartner (175), Cayaen Smith (190), Mahkyi Smith (215), Cooper Mumford (285); Westlake: Korbin Chuchran (120), Curtis Borge (144), Brayden Robison (150).

Instead of going to the 5A Duals, Spanish Fork ventured north to Coalville to wrestle in the North Summit Invite and the Dons came home with the gold trophy.

Spanish Fork scored 316 points to easily outdistance second place Union (251.5). Two other local teams took part as Tintic (88) and Maesper Prep (31) placed fifth and seventh respectively in the 8-team field.

Spanish Fork crowned six individual champions with Karson Shelley (113), Cahill Simons (126), Porter Olson (132), Edward Sears (138), Braysen Roberts (215) and Grant Barney (275). Five other Don wrestlers placed second with Britton Davis (132), Junior Wetzel (144), Cole Andersen (157), Hyrum King (175) and Howie Kinikini (285),

Tintic had one champion with Gordon Grimstead (106) and one silver medalist with Dalton Holden (165). Jaden Grunkemeir (165) placed third for Maeser Prep Academy.

Pleasant Grove’s varsity team traveled to Las Vegas for the Chaparral Invitational and placed second to SLAM Academy by just 6.5 points. A total of 33 teams were in the field.

Jacob Carson (126), Devyn Greenland (132) and Bradlee Farrer (150) won titles while Trevyn Gates (215) placed second. Raymond Griffin (285) lost to the top seed in the very first round but won six matches in a row to claim third place.

At the Enterprise Invitational, Salem Hills’ Breyton Banks (106) defeated Emery’s Monty Christiansen 2-0 to nail down an individual title. The two also met in the All-Star Dual where Banks won 7-5.

Timpanogos’ Easton Earl (138) nailed down an individual title for the Timberwolves while teammates Connor Knudsen (120), Stratton Lewis (132) and Eli Bonyata (190) placed second. Timpanogos finished fifth as a team while Salem Hills was ninth in the 19-team field.

In dual meet action last week Uintah waxed Wasatch 51-17, Mountain View topped Timpanogos 40-24, American Fork slammed Skyridge 45-33, Lehi lapped Orem 66-9, Payson lost to Juab 37-21 and Millard 39-33, Morgan edged Wasatch 39-36, Salem Hills slipped by Farmington 39-32 and beat Grantsville 43-16, Westlake clipped Corner Canyon 37-28, Pleasant Grove pounded Lone Peak 52-21, Spanish Fork stomped ALA 77-3, and Springville pinned Provo 63-15 and scored a perfect dual meet victory over Cottonwood 84-0.

The Red Devils won eight matches by forfeit and six by pin against the Colts. Winning grapplers were Dallas Zobell (106), Bryce Fullmer (113), Porter Nielsen (120), Kelton Taylor (126), Logan Bockenstedt (132), Drake Fedler (138), Hugo Sakuma (144), Lincoln Ludvigson (150), Lisiate Valeti (157), Jason Lee (165), Patrick Clay (175), Delano Rangel (190), Jaxon Morrison (215) and Tyson Naufahu (285).
