Tuesday was a day of highs, lows and delays at the 5A and 6A state softball tournament, which took place at the Cottonwood Complex in Murray.

Not surprisingly, both top-seeded Spanish Fork and No. 4-seed Springville won their first games on the day.

From there, however, Mother Nature took center stage.

The Red Devils faced a team that knows them well as they took on No. 10-seed Salem Hills.

The Skyhawks didn’t make it easy on Springville but the Red Devils proved to be too much, getting the 6-2 win.

Neither team scored in the first three innings but Springville plated two runners in fourth, fifth and sixth to take the lead. Salem Hills got their two runs in the sixth but couldn’t overcome the deficit.

The Dons, on the other hand, overpowered No. 15-seed Bonneville, 12-2, in six innings.

Spanish Fork smashed 13 hits for the game and started well, driving in six runs in the first to seize control.

All three teams were set to play their second games when storms rolled in and forced the games to be postponed until 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

The Red Devils will be playing No. 2-seed Bountiful and the Dons will face the winner of the game between No. 5-seed Olympus and No. 8-seed Tooele in the championship bracket, while the Skyhawks will be playing No. 11-seed Stansbury in an elimination game.

In the 6A competition earlier in the day (before the thunderstorms), both No. 3-seed Skyridge and No. 5-seed Pleasant Grove split their two games.

The first games were pitchers duels for both teams as the Falcons — behind a three-hit gem from pitcher Elliott Plewe — shut out West, 2-0.

The Panthers kept Skyridge scoreless through five innings but the Falcons got big RBI hits from Plewe and Taya Tahbo to plate their two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Things didn’t go as well for Skyridge in the second game against No. 2-seed Herriman as the Mustangs blasted the Falcons, 9-0.

The Vikings opened their game against No. 4-seed Bingham with a home run from Maile Larsen in the top of the first, but Pleasant Grove couldn’t keep the Miners from going in front to get the 3-1 win.

While dropping the first game wasn’t ideal, the Vikings came back strong against No. 11-seed Mountain Ridge.

Although the Sentinels scored a pair of runs in the top of the second to start the scoring, Pleasant Grove notched runs in four of the next five innings to secure the 8-3 victory.

Larsen again led the way, hitting two more home runs and tallying three RBIs.

Both the Vikings and the Falcons need to win three times on Wednesday to reach the 6A title game.

Pleasant Grove will start by facing top-seeded Riverton at 10:30 a.m. If it wins that game, the Vikings will have to beat the Miners twice.

Skyridge will take on No. 8-seed Farmington at 10:30 a.m., then (if the Falcons win) will need to defeat Herriman twice to advance.
