High school wrestling season kicks off with Wrestling Against Cancer Duals
The 2023-2024 prep wrestling season will start off with a huge bang with several county schools squaring off at the Wrestling Against Cancer Duals to be held at Provo High School. The boys competition will be Tuesday starting at 4:30 p.m. with the girls competition beginning on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m.
This wrestling event was inspired by the late Ric Thompson and his wife Angie. Ric Thompson passed away just two weeks before the inaugural event. Thompson also led Payson to their first ever state title in wrestling in 1998.
This will be the 13th year the event has kicked off the prep wrestling season and the charity efforts will be focused on Mindy Spencer as she battles breast cancer. Mindy’s husband Eric was the former head coach at American Fork. The Cavemen will host Farmington on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. and she will be recognized at this meet and receive a donation from the Provo High School wrestling program.
There will be a total of 18 duals, nine each for the boys and girls.
The boys event will feature returning 6A state champion Layton as the Lancers will battle Mountain View and Springville, two teams with huge aspirations this season. Timpanogos will square off against Springville and Cedar Valley in two match-ups between county schools. Host Provo will take on West and Cedar Valley and Skyridge will wrestle Mountain View and West.
The girl duals on Wednesday will feature some of the state’s best programs. The top three schools from last year’s 5A race (Uintah, Cedar Valley and Springville) will grapple as well as 3A power Canyon View along with Mountain View, which has been a solid program since the inception of girls wrestling.
