A Springville player dives into the end zone during the Region 7 game against Maple Mountain in Springville on Friday, Sept. 30, 2023.

Week 8 of the prep football season saw one long winning streak continue in dominant fashion while another lost their first game of the season. Meanwhile, one head coach barely made it in time for his team’s kickoff.

Here’s a look at all the storylines:

Family comes first: As his team prepared for a big 4A Region 8 showdown with Spanish Fork, Provo head coach Kirk Chambers was up in Salt Lake City watching his daughter Allison play in the 4A state tennis tournament. Allison won her match to advance to the semifinals while helping Provo eventually earn a tie for fourth place, the best finish the Bulldogs have had in girls tennis in decades.

As far as the football game, Provo came back in the last minute to defeat Spanish Fork 29-22 and Kirk Chambers was surrounded by his family as the team celebrated its victory.

“It was a special day for the Chambers family,” the Bulldog head coach said. “I barely made it back to the kickoff, but family comes first.”

Big-time performances in Provo vs. Spanish Fork game: Spanish Fork gave Provo everything the Bulldogs could handle. In the end, Tagai Lesa’s big 32-yard run set up his 1-yard plunge for a score with 54 seconds remaining to give Provo the victory. Lesa also had a touchdown rushing where he took a swing pass and broke six Don tackles to get into the end zone.

Another hero for Provo was Kyle Larsen, who had one touchdown rushing, one interception, and then a deflection that led to another Bulldog interception by Hunter Fale that clinched the Bulldog victory.

Meanwhile, Spanish Fork’s Kaden Vest rushed the ball 32 times for 202 yards and shot up to number two in rushing yards per game with a 147.7 average. Spanish Fork has just played seven games, while most of the state’s teams have played eight games. Vest has a total of 1032 yards and a hearty 6.1 yards per carry average.

American Fork scores a big win against rival Pleasant Grove: The Vikings are undefeated no more as American Fork (7-1, 2-1) easily defeated Pleasant Grove (7-1, 2-1) 31-10 in 6A Region 3 action.

Four different Cavemen players scored touchdowns as Jacob Eardley, Jett Nelson, Davis Andrews, and Dax Watts crossed the goal line for American Fork. Dylan Story tossed two touchdown passes and Payton Roth’s 41-yard field goal was true, as were his four extra points as the Cavemen rolled.

The good news for both programs is each still controls its own destiny to get at least a piece of the 6A Region 3 title. Pleasant Grove gets a crack at undefeated Skyridge (8-0, 3-0) next, while American Fork will complete its regular season when it hosts the Skyhawks on October 13.

Skyridge extends winning streak to 15 games in blowout win over rival Lone Peak: Skyridge scored the first 41 points of this contest, including 34 points before halftime to crush Lone Peak, 41-15. Quarterback Jackson Stevens tossed for five touchdowns, three to Jack Burke and another two to Trent Call. Carter Sheffield also went over the goal line for a score for the Falcons. Burke had a big game with 11 receptions for 146 yards while Call made the most of his five catches which netted 113 yards.

Stevens now leads the state with 33 touchdown passes while he’s second in total yards with 2,596. He had 299 yards passing against the Knights. Stevens had one interception but it was the first time in four games that Lone Peak didn’t have a pick six.

Timpanogos tops Payson in a high-scoring affair: Both Timpanogos and Payson can light up the scoreboard and both teams did just that though Timpanogos got the big 35-30 road victory in 4A Region 8 play.

Without injured star player Luke Livingston, the Timberwolves relied more on the running of Easton Bretzing who again came up with a big game with three touchdowns rushing. Quarterback Chase Riggs also ran for a touchdown and passed for two others connecting twice with Cache McCann.

Payson quarterback Kade Edwards had three touchdown passes while Porter Beckstead had two scoring receptions.

The game was tied 21-21 at halftime but Timpanogos scored 14 points in the third quarter to take a 35-21. The Lions scored nine points in the final stanza to put a bit of a scare into the Timberwolf faithful.

Valeti family keys success for Springville: Brothers Tevita and Lisate Valeti are playing big-time football for the Red Devils. Tevita Valeti had two touchdown rushes and now has 20 on the season, third most in the state. Tevita also has 1,080 total yards rushing on 145 carries for a 6.1 per rushing attempt average.

Lisiate Valeti had one touchdown pass, while running for another as Springville held off Maple Mountain, 31-23.

The Golden Eagles did get another good game by quarterback Banks Jackson who ran for one score and tossed for another. The kickers for both teams shined as Fernando Banuelos had three field goals for Maple Mountain, while Lukas Franks had one field goal and was 4-for-4 on extra points for Springville.

Lehi, Orem, Salem Hills and Timpview take care of business: There were no real surprises as favored teams Lehi, Orem, Salem Hills and Timpview cruised to victories.

Mays Madsen had two touchdowns receiving while Pioneer teammate Boston Fabrizio opened up the game’s scoring with a 30-yard pick six as Lehi got its first 6A Region 3 win to go 6-2 overall. Westlake (1-7. 0-3) lost its seventh straight contest.

Feleti Iongi ran for two touchdowns and booted a 32-yard field goal to lead Orem (3-5, 2-2) to a 31-19 victory over the Cedar Valley Aviators (2-6, 0-4).

Salem Hills (6-2, 3-1) won its fourth game in a row, defeating Mountain View (2-6, 1-3), 41-14. The Skyhawks scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to put the game away. One of those scores was a scoop and score by Sam Kinikini.

His Skyhawk teammate Tate Allred scored twice running the ball and Ledger Holmes ran for one score and tossed another as the Skyhawks used some trickeration to get six points. Kort Stewart caught two touchdown passes, one from Holmes and one from quarterback Jedi Nelson to thrill the home faithful.

Timpview (6-2, 4-0) had no problem with Wasatch (2-6, 1-3) in a 5A Region 7 battle won by the Thunderbirds. Tei Nacua scored via a 50-yard punt return and a 24-yard receiving touchdown. Sophomore quarterback Helaman Casuga tossed three touchdown passes and Luke Thornock had a 35-yard field goal.

Wasatch’s Carter Bucad did have a 12-yard scamper for a touchdown and has 1,037 rushing yards on the season thus far.

Two county teams No. 1 in latest RPI: The newest RPI rankings have American Fork on top in 6A with Corner Canyon (7-1) in second position. Despite being undefeated and the returning state champions, Skyridge finds itself ranked third and would be on the same side of the bracket with the team they beat in the championship game last year in Corner Canyon.

Lehi, Pleasant Grove and Lone Peak find themselves in positions five through seven in the RPI rankings respectively, while Westlake checks in at No. 17 out of 18 6A programs.

Timpview finds itself on top of the 5A RPI rankings after previous No. 1-ranked Box Elder (7-1) lost to Bountiful. Timpview has two losses but one is to Skyridge and another to a California powerhouse.

Springville finds itself at No. 4 while Maple Mountain is No. 14. With its win, Orem moved up No.19 but is curiously ranked behind Wasatch (No. 17), a team the Tigers beat 44-0 and has one less win. Cedar Valley is ranked 22nd out of 27 5A programs. A total of 24 teams will be invited to the 5A playoffs.

In 4A, Provo finds itself at No. 3 behind undefeated Sky View (8-0) and Crimson Cliffs (7-1) for another week. Even if the Bulldogs win out, they could slip behind Ridgeline (7-1) and Park City (8-0) as Provo’s next two opponents are just a combined 4-12.

Timpanogos is No. 7, Salem Hills No. 8, Spanish Fork No. 16, Payson No. 17, and Mountain View is ranked No. 21. A total of 24 teams will make the 4A playoffs.

ALA is No. 10 out of 11 2A teams and all 2A programs will participate in the playoffs.

Big game of the week No. 1: Skyridge (8-0, 3-0) will clinch a piece of the 6A Region 3 title with a win, while Pleasant Grove (7-1, 2-1) hopes to rebound from its 31-10 loss to American Fork and pull off the upset. Both teams can move up in the RPI with a victory against a team with a lot of wins.

Big game of the week No. 2: This is a game basically for second place in 4A Region 8 but also could be a big win in the RPI race. Timpanogos (6-2, 3-1) gets to host this game against Salem Hills (6-2, 3-1) and will hope that its home faithful can make a difference in a game that promises to come down to the wire.

Big game of the week No 3: In one of the oldest rivalries in Utah prep football, Payson (3-5, 1-3) hopes to beat its archrival Spanish Fork (3-4, 2-2). The RPI has these two schools separated from each other by just one position and the other analytics also suggest that this will be a barn burner.

Extra Points: The RPI computers can throw out some interesting data. San Juan’s winning streak is at 33 games and it has won the last 2A state titles, but it took until this week for the Broncos to be ranked No. 1 in the 2A RPI. And most people that follow Utah prep closely don’t think Morgan (5-3) is the No. 4 team in 3A. The Trojans are much better than that. But undefeated Enterprise (8-0) might have the biggest ax to grind as the Wolves are ranked No. 2 behind Duchesne, a team that it beat earlier in the season, 34-28 … Only six teams remain undefeated (1A Enterprise, 2A San Juan, 3A Richfield, 4A Park City, 4A Sky View, 6A Skyridge) and none in 5A … Seven teams remain without a win including three in 5A with Clearfield, Skyline and Taylorsville … There were only two games pitting Utah County programs against teams outside the valley. The results were a split and Utah County teams boast a strong 37-20 record overall.
