UHSAA announces second consideration of regions for 2025-2027

Spanish Fork fans celebrate a good play during the 4A semifinal game against Ridgeline at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2024.

Every two years the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA) goes through the arduous task of reclassifying all of the schools in the state in an attempt to make the athletic and activity competitions as fair as possible.

There is no perfect way to do such a job but the association attempts to find the best balance it can.

The UHSAA is currently in the midst of that process for the 2025-27 school years, announcing on Thursday the second consideration of which schools would be placed in which regions.

There can be a different set of regions for football and other sports and activities, which can cause some confusion.

Utah Valley’s large public schools have been divided in regions in Class 4A, 5A and 6A for the 2023-25 school years, and this consideration would continue that trend.

The largest schools would all be grouped in Region 3 in Class 6A for all sports, comprising American Fork, Cedar Valley, Lehi, Lone Peak, Skyridge and Westlake.

Utah Valley schools in Class 5A and 4A, however, would have some regions be different for football and other sports.

Most of the Class 5A schools would be in Region 7 for non-football sports and activities, a region that would be made up of Maple Mountain, Payson, Pleasant Grove, Salem Hills, Spanish Fork, Springville, Timpview and Wasatch.

Non-football sports and activities would have four Utah Valley teams in Class 4A’s Region 8, with Mountain View, Orem, Provo and Timpanogos being joined by Uintah and Park City.

In football, however, Orem would move up to Class 5A and compete in Region 6 with a hybrid group of schools that would include Alta, Bountiful, Brighton, Olympus, Viewmont and Woods Cross.

Salem Hills, on the other hand, would drop down to Class 4A for football and take Orem’s spot in Region 8.

These current regions aren’t markedly different than how they are currently constituted, with the biggest changes being Cedar Valley and Pleasant Grove swapping places and Orem in a different region.

The next meeting in the realignment process is scheduled to take place at the UHSAA offices in Sandy on Dec. 19.
