American Fork and Skyridge players battle for the ball during the Region 3 game in American Fork on Wednesday, March 27, 2024.

All the waiting is finally over.

High school boys soccer teams in Class 4A, 5A and 6A finally got to see how they stacked up in the last ratings percentage index (RPI) and how that translated onto the respective playoff brackets.

A couple of teams got good news as they earned some of the top seeds in their respective classifications.

In Utah Valley, American Fork’s late push proved to be enough to propel the Cavemen into the No. 2 spot in 6A, just behind top-seeded Farmington.

But the rest of Region 3 was also well-represented as Lone Peak got the No. 3 seed, with Pleasant Grove slotted at No. 4.

Skyridge came in as the No. 8-seed, meaning four Utah Valley 6A teams will start out with first round byes.

Westlake and Lehi, however, will be starting out on the road.

The Thunder, the No. 17-seed, head to Layton to take on the No. 16-seeded Lancers, while the No. 19-seeded Pioneers will play at No. 14 Mountain Ridge in the opening round.

In Class 5A, Wasatch’s undefeated season (14-0) was enough to give the Wasps the No. 1 seed, while Salem Hills got the No. 3 spot with its 12-2 record.

The other Region 7 teams that made the tournament, however, will square off against opponents in the first round.

The big battle will be the third go-round for No. 19 Cedar Valley and No. 14 Maple Mountain as those two teams will meet in an elimination game in Spanish Fork.

No. 10-seed Timpview will host No. 23 West Jordan, while No. 17 Spanish Fork heads to No. 16 Kearns.

The parity in Region 8 this season resulted in low seeds across the board in Class 4A, with Provo (No. 14), Timpanogos (No. 15), Orem (No. 17) and Mountain View (No. 18) all facing first-round matchups.

The Bruins will play at the Timberwolves in the first round, while the Tigers play at No. 16 Tooele and the Bulldogs host No. 19 Jordan.

All of the first-round games are scheduled to be played at home sites on May 10 at 4 p.m.

Orem’s Kaylee Westfall tied for third after first day at 4A girls golf tourney

It was a solid opening round for Orem sophomore Kaylee Westfall, who shot a 77 (5-over-par) on the first day of the 4A state girls golf tournament at Talons Cove in Saratoga Springs on Wednesday.

Westfall finished with three birdies and 10 pars, but the five bogeys kept her from being closer to the top of the leaderboard. That score still put her in a tie for third with Green Canyon senior Avery Parker.

She’ll need a stellar performance in the second round to have a shot to catch the leader, Crimson Cliffs sophomore Kate Walker, who fired a 65 (7-under-par) on Wednesday.

Timpanogos senior Sydney Draper was the other local golfer who did well on the first day, tying for a 11th with an 84 (12-over-par) on Wednesday.

Orem was the only Utah Valley team to make it to the finals but finished in 13th on the day, failing to make the cut. Crimson Cliffs leads the competition with Green Canyon six strokes back.

Westfall, Draper and all of the other golfers who made the cut are scheduled to compete in the final round of the 4A state girls golf tournament at Talons Cove on Thursday.

Correction: High school coaches honored by Utah Sports Hall of Fame Foundation

On April 29, the Utah Sports Hall of Fame Foundation held a banquet to celebrate the contributions of many coaches and athletes, including three with Utah Valley ties.

Mark Low, who coached at both Provo High and Utah Valley University, along with former Pleasant Grove head football coach Bill Mikelson and Spanish Fork head softball coach Don Andrews were recognized by being added to the foundation’s Gallery of Honor, but were not inducted into the Hall of Fame as reported.

The Gallery of Honor recognizes the best college and high school coaches, officials and other contributors. Utah Sports Hall of Fame inductions occur in the fall.

The initial report also omitted the recognition of Andrews, who was added to the foundation’s Gallery of Honor as a Distinguished High School Coach.

Andrews led the Spanish Fork softball program for 22 seasons where he went 507-125 or an impressive winning percentage of .802. Andrews won six state titles, finished second seven times with three other third place finishes. He led the Don program to 18 region championships.

He was also honored as a region Coach of the Year twice as well being named as the 5A Coach of the Year two times.

Don players under his direction won seven state MVP awards and he had 100 first team and second team all-state performers.
