The 14th Annual Wrestling Against Cancer Duals will once again be hosted by Provo High School.

The event has gone through some permutations over the years but for the second straight year it will be held over two days with boys wrestling on Tuesday and the girls on Wednesday. Starting time for boys will be 3 pm and then the girls will commence action at 11 am.

With regards to the boys, several top teams will take part including the top two teams from 6A last season in Layton and Westlake. Timpanogos and Mountain View, who both placed third and fourth in the 4A state meet respectively will also take part.

The girls competition will also have some spirited competition with returning 3A Canyon View coming to the event for the third consecutive year. Other top teams include Cedar Valley, which placed third in 5A state last season, and perennial 5A power Springville.

Layton, who has won the last two 6A boys state titles, features a star-studded line-up with 3-time state champion Geronimo Rivera and returning state champion Noah Bull. Both wrestlers are also returning All-Americans. Other top Lancer wrestlers also include returning finalists Aiden Bastian, Lander Bosh and Gavin Regis.

Blake Mangum will take over the reins as head coach of Westlake and the Thunder hope to push Layton for the gold trophy. Brothers Israel and Curtis (Zion) Borge made the 6A championship finals last season with Zion winning a title while Israel lost to Rivera in one of the best matches of the tournament. Corbyn Robison and Josh Fish are returning state champions, while Korbin Chuchran placed third in state after placing second two seasons ago.

Timpanogos returns a good bulk of their team that placed third last year including Conner Knudsen while Mountain View’s Glade Harman is a returning state champion and his Bruin teammate Isaac McGee placed second. Another top wrestler in the field will be Maple Mountain’s Caleb Jackson, a 2-time finalist and state champion last season.

Other competing boys teams will be Brighton, Skyridge, Springville, Timpview, West and host Provo.

The girls event will also feature some great teams and competitors including the returning 3A champions Canyon View. Julia Kay had an undefeated season for the Falcons last year and is nationally ranked. Sisters Meletilini and Tilisa Matakaiongo also took state last year for Canyon View while Gemma Carter placed second.

Rhya Balmforth is a returning state finalist for Cedar Valley while Emery Mortimer is a 2-time state finalist for Springville. Layton’s Brynlee Sorensen is another returning state champion while Provo’s Ella Reynolds placed second in state last season for the Bulldogs.

Other competing girls teams will be Brighton, Manti, North Sanpete, Riverton and West.

The event, while a great way to kick off the wrestling season, also has a charitable aspect to it as Provo High will donate money to two families that have members fighting cancer.

The recipients of this effort will be Susan Anderson from Spanish Fork and Joidee Gappmayer from the Brighton program. Anderson is the wife of Crispen Anderson, a longtime assistant wrestling coach in the valley, while Gappmayer is the head girls coach at Brighton and assists her husband Burke with the boys team as well. The Anderson family will be honored Tuesday night while the Gappmayer family will be recognized at the girls event on Wednesday.

The Wrestling Against Cancer Duals was created by former Provo head coach Brian Preece as a way to pay tribute to his friend Ric Thompson, the former Payson head wrestling coach who lost his life to cancer in 2010.
