No matter what the Springville boys basketball team did down the stretch of its non-region game at Pleasant Grove on Wednesday morning, the Red Devils just couldn’t shake the Vikings.

Springville’s 8-point lead to start the fourth quarter evaporated as Pleasant Grove went on a 10-2 run. The Red Devils went up by six later in the frame, only to see the Vikings answer with five straight points in response.

But when the game was on the line, Springville junior center Jamyn Sondrup had the answers.

Sondrup’s tenacity and nerves of steel proved to be the difference as the Red Devils held on for the 71-68 win.

“I have some really talented players and sometimes we have a tendency to pick ourselves rather than each other,” Springville head coach Justin Snell said. “The goal of scheduling heavy early was to really push us and see what’s going to happen. When things get tough, are we going to play as a group or are we going to go solo?

“For me, that was the best part of the second half. My guys shared so well. They shot it when they were open and passed it when they weren’t. They found that line really, really well.”

Sondrup made four key plays for his team in the final minute.

The first came with Springville up by three, but Pleasant Grove looked to narrow the gap with a hard drive to the basket. Sondrup, however, was in the right place to block the shot and then chase down the rebound.

The Vikings bounced back, forcing a Red Devil turnover and getting a breakaway layup to make the score 69-68. Pleasant Grove was forced to foul, but Springville couldn’t get either free throw to drop.

Again it was Sondrup who came up big.

“Before we even shot the free throw, I knew if he was missing I was getting the rebound,” Sondrup said. “I’d been in all day on free throws, so I just had to get it. Then I just needed to focus up and hit my free throws. I’ve been working on them a lot.”

He won the battle for the rebound, got fouled, and then calmly drained both foul shots to again put his team up by three.

“Jamyn is such a good kid,” Snell said. “He’s the one guy in our group who should walk the line on the other side a little bit. He is 6-foot-10 just this beast, but because he’s such a good kid he wants what’s best for the group which makes him not always choose himself.

“We were talking on the bench when he grabbed that offensive rebound on that free throw. Sometimes you’re just 6-foot-10 and you’ve got to bounce. He was there, so he just took it. And then on top of that, he drilled two free throws.”

The Vikings still had 13 seconds left and did a masterful job of working the ball around and getting senior Zane Windsor a solid look at the game-tying 3-pointer from the corner.

The shot came up just short and Sondrup didn’t let Pleasant Grove get another chance, tipping the ball high in the air a couple of times and coming down with it as the final buzzer sounded.

“We want to learn if we can win a game down the stretch,” Snell said. “We had some bad moments, but things like that happen in the state tournament. Are you going to fall apart and lose or group back together and make plays? Fortunately we got one today.”

Sondrup said he felt like the Red Devil offense came through when it had to and made the difference late.

“I feel like offensively we just played well together,” Sondrup said. “We still need to work on our defense, but it’s coming. We’re going to be good as we keep working on it.”

Springville ended up getting 28 points from senior Andrew Miller, while Sondrup added 17. The Red Devils also got 13 points each from junior Mason Hanson and sophomore Swift Hall.

Balance was also a hallmark of the Viking attack, with four players in double figures: Junior Cooper Crockett scored 13 points, while seniors Hudson Guthrie, Andrew Anderson and Zane Windsor notched 12 points apiece.

“It’s definitely a strength of our group that we have seven, eight, nine guys who are all capable of closing a game,” Pleasant Grove head coach Carsen Williams said. “We had two guys out there who didn’t have experience closing games and they played really well. I think it speaks to their work ethic and culture that they are trying to build that it is about next man up.”

Although the Vikings would’ve loved to see the final shot go in to force overtime, Williams said he was pleased with some of the things his squad did down the stretch to give themselves a shot.

“We gave ourselves a chance at the end, getting an open look in the corner for a phenomenal shooter,” Williams said. “I’ll take that look every time. Our execution and focus right there was really good.”

Williams also felt like having to battle through the adversity here early in the season is something Pleasant Grove hopes will pay dividends as the season progresses.

“We have two Top 5 6A teams that we play next week and our region is a gauntlet as well,” Williams said. “It’s really beneficial to play a team like Springville that has Division I athletes and size. That will help prepare us for what’s to come.”

Springville (3-2) next plays at Fremont on Dec. 4, while Pleasant Grove (1-2) will be at Davis on Dec. 3. Both games are scheduled to tipoff at 7 p.m.
