Listed at 6-8 and 290 pounds, Spanish Fork’s Aaron Dunn is an imposing figure for the opposition. The senior, who plays both on the offensive and defensive lines for the Dons, just signed a letter of intent to play at the University of Utah, and with that decision behind him, Dunn did his thing helping his team cruise to a 42-14 win at Mountain View Friday night.
“I’ve just committed (to Utah) and I’m really excited to get up there,” Dunn said.
But for the time being, Dunn has some unfinished business in prep football.
“I’m just glad to be out here with my buddies playing one last season,” Dunn said. “High school football is different but (signing the letter of intent) does take some of that pressure off.”
Dunn will likely play offensive tackle for Utah but in high school football he still gets to play both ways and he said he definitely likes tackling over blocking.
“He put some licking on some people today,” said Spanish Fork head coach Dustin Smith. “He is just so long and so fast.”
But his height and size aren’t the only things Smith said Dunn has in his arsenal.
“He’s just so smart, he gets the game and he’s fun to watch,” added Smith.
Dunn actually plays right tackle to protect the blind side of Don quarterback McKay Smith, who is left-handed. Dunn, along with the rest of the offensive line, allowed the senior signal caller to shred the Mountain View defense with three touchdown tosses, two of which covered 59 and 54 yards.
The 59-yarder was a thing of beauty as McKay Smith hit Bronson Kaulauli in stride down the sidelines that would give Spanish Fork a 21-7 lead in the second quarter.
“The coaches made a great call,” said McKay Smith. “Bronson ran a great route and I just had to put it just where I needed to and got a good touchdown.”
McKay Smith also connected with another Brock Jacobson on a 54-yard score. His other touchdown toss was a 9-yarder to Gage Christensen which staked Spanish Fork off to a 7-0 lead.
McKay Smith is the son of Don head coach Dustin Smith, and McKay said his father can be a little harder on him than the rest of the team.
“He is (harder) on me, just a little bit,” said McKay Smith while Dunn agreed with a smile.
“Yeah, he holds him accountable,” said Dunn.
The Don head coach did have praise for his quarterback and son McKay.
“He continues to be real efficient with the ball and throwing it real well,” said Dustin Smith.
Dustin Smith was also pleased with his team’s effort, though he said there is still room for improvement.
“I actually thought we played good, but we didn’t play great,” said the Don head coach. “There’s a lot we have to clean up actually, but we played well enough, and we got it rolling there in the second quarter. We’ve got to play better if we’re going to get as far as we want to get.”
Another hero for the Dons was Kaden Vest, who had two touchdown runs. His 74-yarder, where he broke through a scrum at the line of scrimmage to scamper 74 yards right up the middle of the field, was the first Don score of the second half and basically put the game away as Spanish Fork built up a 35-7 lead. Vest also had a 14-yard touchdown run in the second quarter which put the Dons up 14-0.
Spanish Fork’s last score was when Jacobson plunged in from two yards out. After Breakir Killpack’s sixth successful PAT, the running clock rule came into effect as Spanish Fork led 42-7.
Mountain View’s Kalvin Floyd hauled in two touchdown passes from Bruin quarterback Hyrum Stafford. Floyd also kicked both extra points. Floyd’s last score came with just nine seconds left in the final stanza but it gave the home faithful a nice moment to cheer about in what was otherwise a tough game for the Bruins.
With the win, Spanish Fork moves to 4-1 overall 2-0 in 4A Region 8 play. Spanish Fork will host Salem Hills (3-2, 1-1) Friday. With the loss, Mountain View is now 3-2 overall and 1-1 in league play. The Bruins will make the long trip Friday out to Vernal to take on Uintah (3-2, 0-2). Both games will start at 7pm.
