Valley Top 5: Teams jockey for position as state tournaments grow closer

Each week, Daily Herald sports experts Darnell Dickson and Brandon Gurney rank the top five teams in the Utah Valley in baseball, softball, boys soccer, boys volleyball and boys and girls lacrosse (records as of April 21):

BASEBALL

1. Pleasant Grove (14-1)

Vikings are on a 13-game winning streak, top RPI team in 6A.

2. American Fork (13-3)

Cavemen get first crack at PG with 3-game series this week.

3. Maple Mountain (15-1)

Chase Johnston is untouchable: 6-0, 0.92 ERA, 57 strikeouts.

4. Timpanogos (14-6)

Canyon Clegg hitting .451, 2-0 in the mound for T-Wolves.

5. Wasatch (12-5)

Look out for Wasps, who are off to a 5-1 start in Region 7.

SOFTBALL

1. Salem Hills (19-2)

Skyhawks hit a small bump with loss to Desert Hills but outscored next two opponents 31-0.

2. Westlake (13-4)

Thunder rebounded after tough loss to Bingham by rolling past Syracuse and Weber.

3. Payson (14-4)

A 16-6 win vs. Timpanogos moves Lions past T-Wolves in the rankings.

4. Timpanogos (13-4)

T-Wolves remain on of the Valley’s top teams despite loss to Lions.

5. Maple Mountain (14-5)

Golden Eagles scored a combined 41 runs in wins vs. Enterprise and Wasatch.

BOYS SOCCER

1. Lone Peak (11-2)

Knights scored impressive wins vs. Skyridge and Lehi to claim top sp

2. Orem (10-1)

Tigers are Utah Valley’s hottest team with nine straight wins.

3. Skyridge (9-4)

Falcons lost in OT to Lone Peak but recovered nicely with 3-1 victory vs. AF.

4. American Fork (8-2)

Cavemen remain one of the Valley’s best despite setback to Skyridge.

5. Wasatch (10-2)

Wasps scored a big 6-1 win over Timpview following tough OT loss to Spanish Fork.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

1. Maple Mountain (20-1)

Taft Hillman (10.9 assists per game) makes it all go for Golden Eagles.

2. Westlake (16-5)

Thunder running hot, winning three straight matches in sweeps.

3. Orem (20-5)

Lucky Jennings has an array of weapons to set for Tigers.

4. Lehi (13-3)

Rematch with Westlake on Tuesday, Thunder won in five last time.

5. Wasatch (16-6)

JJ Serre and Chase Billeter are great 1-2 punch for Wasps.

BOYS LACROSSE

1. Skyridge (12-0)

Falcons blew by AF 17-2 to stay on top of rankings.

2. Lone Peak (8-3)

Knights are serving notice with six straight victories.

3. Maple Mountain (8-4)

Golden Eagles outscored Westlake and Springville by combined 37-9 margin.

4. Cedar Valley (8-2)

Aviators dropped tough one to Bingham but rebounded to take thrilling 6-5 win vs. Wasatch.

5. Payson (9-4)

Lions took impressive 12-2 win over Timpanogos after losing two straight.

1. Salem Hills (10-1)

Hooper Brooke Warren can also play a little lacrosse (38 goals).

2. Skyridge (10-2)

Falcons on hot streak with eight straight victories.

3. Lone Peak (10-3)

Lisonbee and Neueschwander with 44 points each for Knights.

4. Provo (8-2)

Bulldogs have won seven matches in a row.

5. Timpanogos (8-3)

Balanced T-Wolves have five players with 20 points or more.
