Valley Top 5: Top teams take tough losses in out-of-state tournaments

Daily Herald writers Darnell Dickson, Brandon Gurney and Brian E. Preece rank the top five Utah Valley teams in boys basketball, girls basketball, boys wrestling and girls wrestling for the week of Dec. 29.

BOYS BASKETBALL

1. Timpview 11-1

The Thunderbirds incurred their first loss of the season to Redondo Union (Calif.), but still remain on top of the local scene.

2. Westlake 11-0

Utah County’s lone remaining undefeated team keeps rolling

3. American Fork 6-5

Cavemen competed well, but ultimately took two losses to top out-of-state competition

4. Orem 9-5

Orem took a tough loss to powerhouse Centennial (Calif.) 50-48

5. Springville 9-3

The Red Devils took San Joaquin Memorial (Calif.) to the brink before falling 92-87

GIRLS BASKETBALL

1. Pleasant Grove 11-0

Vikings with Esperanza (Calif.), Davis and Raymond (Alberta) next on schedule.

2. Westlake 9-2

Thunder ready for new experiences in Region 2.

3. Wasatch 10-2

Wasps will be main challenger for PG in Region 7.

4. Lehi 9-4

Pioneers giving up just 34.8 points per game, so defense wins.

5. American Fork 7-3

Cavemen good at winning close games so far this season.

Thunder want to push Layton for 6A supremacy.

2. Wasatch

Wasps  setting sights on 5A title.

3. Timpanogos

Likely to be the best as Uintah looks unbeatable in 4A.

4. Spanish Fork

Dons won’t give up 5A title without a fight. 

5. Mountain View

Bruins still a formidable team in the 4A ranks.

1. Wasatch

Wasatch Wasps look to be a dynasty in girls wrestling.

2. Salem Hills

Skyhawks have the firepower to win a trophy in 5A. 

3. Cedar Valley

Aviators have a talented group of athletes. 

4. Westlake

Thunder still have a chance for a gold trophy in wide open 6A team race.

5. Maple Mountain

Golden Eagles have some good individual talent.
