After the semifinals and consolation matches on Thursday, Westlake’s chances to wrestle away the gold trophy from Layton drifted away. Layton (253 points) claimed its third straight 6A title so it was now up to the Thunder grapplers to place as high as they could and hold off Corner Canyon for the silver trophy.

The Thunder did just that as both Westlake (198.5) and Corner Canyon (191.5) had two individual champions.

Utah County did have five individual champs. Joining Westlake’s Israel Borge (138 pounds) and Kaizen Detoles (165) were Skyridge’s Jacob Millward (113), and Pleasant Grove’s Ian Fritz (157) and Bradlee Farrer (175).

For Westlake’s Detoles, he finished his season 29-2 with a 2-0 victory over Davis’ Ryker Roundy. Detoles, whose sister won four state titles for Westlake, used a more conservative approach to this match and his escape and a penalty point for stalling was all the points he needed.

“I usually like to mix it up but Ryker (Roundy) has a good slide by,” Detoles said. “When I hit a double leg, he almost got me with it so I was a bit more careful after that.”

“It feels awesome to take state,” Detoles added. “I won’t win as many titles as my sister but two would still be pretty good.”

Roundy wrestled a smart strategic match and didn’t go on bottom as Detoles is tough on top. But the Thunder junior went down in the third period, broke serve, and in the end, got the only point he needed.

Milward, just a freshman, joined his brother Joshua Millward as Skyridge state champions.

Millward had to win two very close contests including a 1-0 decision over Perry Fowler of Syracuse. Millward escaped in the second period then Fowler chose neutral and the Falcon grappler held him off to advance.

Then he had to take on Layton’s Aiden Bastian in the finals. Millward was down early 3-0 and trailed 3-1 at the end of the first period. Then he went down, escaped, took Bastian down to his back for four nearfall to turn the tables. Then he held off a late charge by Bastian who scored an escape and takedown himself as Millward escaped one last time with 26 seconds left to win 9-8.

Millward did feel his second match was a bit harder or more intense.

“Honestly, the finals (was a tougher match). It was a lot more higher scoring and higher intensity,” Millward related.

Millwards older brother Asher, just a sophomore, placed third after being upset in the quarterfinals. But Jacob said his brother was key to his own success.

“I wouldn’t be here without him,” Jacob stated.

For Bradlee Farrer, he claimed his second state, winning a title as a sophomore but then coming up short last year. He had no issues this season, pinning Fremont’s Kamren Wolff in the second round. Farrer is currently ranked No. 10 in the nation and has tested himself throughout his career in tournaments like the Walsh Ironman and Doc Buchanan. Both of his losses in 2024-25 were to out-of-state competition.

“I wrestle in those tournaments so wrestling here (at state) isn’t as big of a deal,” Farrer said. “I really enjoy challenging myself.”

Farrer has signed to wrestle at the University of Wyoming.

Several Utah County wrestlers placed second. Westlake’s Korbin Chuchran lost 8-3 to Fritz of Pleasant Grove. His Thunder teammates Jamyne Xoumphonphackdy (126) and Zion Borge (132) also won silver medals. Borge lost to Layton’s Geronimo Rivera who won his fourth state title.

American Fork’s Tege Kelley (150) fell short in his match against Layton’s Noah Bull, while Lone Peak’s Jared Smith (285) was pinned by Corner Canyon’s Kaydon Williams in the third round.

With the wins by Fritz and Farrer the Vikings moved past Syracuse by a mere half point to finish fifth in the team standings and just five points behind fourth place Davis (133.5).

Skyridge (58), Lone Peak (57.5) and American Fork (56.5) finished eighth, ninth and tenth in the 18-team 6A field respectively with just 1.5 points separating these teams.

6A Notes: At 285 pounds Lone Peak and Corner Canyon had the four best wrestlers. In the championship finals Lone Peak’s Jared Smith met up with Corner Canyon’s returning state champion Kaydon Williams with the Charger grappler winning. Their understudies Patrick O’Bannon and Nathan Holladay had a very entertaining bout with Corner Canyon again winning.

American Fork head coach Cole Kelley also announced his retirement from coaching. His son Tege was a 3-time finalist and 2023 state champion for the Caveman program.

3A Notes: Juab (289.5) easily won the 3A state title as Morgan (194) again finished in second. It was the ninth title in a row for the Juab program. Thanks to a pin by South Summit 285-pounder Traven Boger, South Summit (183) surged past Delta (179.5) for third
