SALT LAKE CITY — As an indicator of how things are going, hearing the opposing student section chant, “Up by 30!” in the third quarter is the last thing you want to hear.

No. 6 Lone Peak fell behind early and never recovered in its 6A quarterfinal against No. 3 Layton, trailing by as many as 34 points and ending up on the short end of an 86-55 score on Monday at the Huntsman Center.

“This was definitely disappointing for us,” Knights coach Rob Ross said. “We’ve had a crazy season and our kids have gone through some stuff, especially hard stuff. As far as this game was concerned, we just weren’t ready, and that’s on me as a coach. Layton just came out and stuck it on us. They started the game well and we never recovered. They played at a really high level.”

The Lancers, who tied with Davis for the Region 1 title, were on fire from the tip and shot a sizzling 61.4% from the field (35 of 57). Sophomore guard Karter Miller was 5 of 6 from the 3-point line and led all scorers with 27 points while adding five assists and three steals. Big man Josh Checketts had 15 points and Tage Allen 11 for Layton.

Sam Suarez scored 12 points for Lone Peak, all in the first half, and Logan Brimhall had 12 points as well, all in the second. But the Knights didn’t give themselves a chance by shooting a frigid 3 for 17 (17.6%) from the field in the first quarter and missing all 11 3-point attempts in the first half.

Lone Peak went down by double digits at 14-4 with two minutes to play in the first quarter and was never able to close the gap.

Leading 35-22 at halftime, Layton blitzed the Knights 14-2 to start the second and eventually led by 30, 63-33, late in the third quarter.

Ross’ job was to make sure his players knew the season was still a success.

“This year’s team did a lot of great things,” Ross said. “We’ve implemented a completely new defense. This team won the region championship, which we hadn’t won in several years. We played as hard of a schedule as any team in the state. We played some really good teams and beat some really good teams. We hate to end on a game like this, but we just try to focus on the positives.”

The Lancers advance into the semifinals, where they will play Region 1 co-champ and No. 2 seed Davis on Wednesday. The two teams split the regular season series 1-1.

No. 4 Corner Canyon 62, No. 5 Bingham 52

Bryton Valdez scored 15 points and Noah Bendinger added 13 as Corner Canyon (18-7) held off a late Bingham charge to advance to Wednesday’s semifinals.

Down 14 early in the fourth quarter, the Miners closed to three, 50-47, with just over two minutes to play. But the Chargers made the right plays down the stretch and moved on to the semifinals for the fifth straight season.

Jason Peterson topped Bingham (17-8) with 12 points.
