The last time the Springville softball team walked off a softball field, it carried off a trophy. It just wasn’t the one they wanted.
But the Red Devil loss to Spanish Fork in the 2024 5A state championship series is now ancient history.
It’s the 2025 Springville team’s turn to make its mark.
The Red Devils started the season off the way they wanted to, using a big third inning to pull away and eventually beat Timpanogos, 12-5, at Lakeside Park in Orem.
Springville plated a couple of runs in their first at-bat, but found that small lead in danger when the Timberwolves put beginners in with just one out.
But Red Devil pitcher Brooklynn Richardson got a strikeout and a popout to end the threat and keep Springville in front.
The visitors found themselves in the opposite position in the top of the third with no one on and two outs. But the Red Devils didn’t go down quietly.
Instead, they put together a game-changing series of plays to seize control.
It started with a walk, followed by a single by Kaleimai Akiona. Another walk loaded the bases and Springville was in business.
Ava Brunger came through with the first big hit, driving in two runs with a single.
After a single from rightfielder Sami Dellamas to load the bases again, Tyler Haveron added to the scoring with another RBI single.
But the Red Devils weren’t done, not with Morgan Fairbourne coming up to the plate. She hammered a bases-clearing double.
Springville added one more run on another single before a flyout ended the inning.
Timpanogos came back with some big hits off their own in the bottom of the third inning.
A walk and a sacrifice grounder put a Timberwolf runner in scoring position, abs senior shortstop Kelci Gingras bright here in with a single.
Timpanogos sophomore pitcher Shaylie Lang then drilled a double off the centerfield fence that just missed being a home run, driving in another run.
The Timberwolves got one more RBI single in the frame to cut the deficit to 9-3, but that would be as close as they would get.
Springville added two runs in the fifth, set up by a triple by Morgan, and another in the sixth off an RBI single from 21.
Timpanogos did get a couple of runs in the bottom of the seventh but couldn’t erase the big deficit.
Springville (1-0) is scheduled to play at American Fork on Wednesday, while Timpanogos (0-1) will host the Cavemen on Thursday
Both games are scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
