Valley Top 5: First spring rankings showcase positioning heading into spring break

Each week, Daily Herald sports experts Jared Lloyd and Darnell Dickson rank the top five teams in the Utah Valley in baseball, softball, boys soccer, boys volleyball and boys and girls lacrosse. (records as of March 31):

BASEBALL

1. Pleasant Grove (8-1)

Vikings off to a hot start in 2025.

2. American Fork (8-1)

Only loss for Cavemen was to out-of-state team.

3. Maple Mountain (10-1)

10-game winning streak ended by PG last week.

4. Lone Peak (5-1)

Junior Grady Slesk with 16 strikeouts in 16 innings pitched

5. Orem (8-2)

Seven straight wins for Tigers includes five games of 10 or more runs

SOFTBALL

1. Salem Hills (9-1)

The Skyhawks check in with the fewest losses in Utah Valley.

2. Lehi (10-2)

The Pioneers had won six straight before being brought back to earth in a big loss to Riverton.

3. Timpanogos (11-2)

The Timberwolves won at Payson to edge the Lions in the rankings.

4. Payson (9-2)

The Lions play a lot of close games, going 4-2 so far in games decided by three runs or less.

5. Maple Mountain (9-2)

In their only two losses this year, the Golden Eagles put up impressive offensive numbers (14 and 15 runs).

BOYS SOCCER

1. American Fork (6-0)

The Cavemen are still unbeaten but tough tests are looming on the horizon.

2. Pleasant Grove (8-1)

The Vikings needed PKs but they got the big win at Lone Peak.

3. Lone Peak (7-1)

How will the Knights respond to suffering their first loss?

4. Timpanogos (6-0)

The Timberwolves have only allowed two goals all season.

5. Wasatch (6-1)

The Wasps have been dominant in Region 7 so far.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

1. Maple Mountain (17-1)

Defending 5A state champs won 17 straight before losing to Windward (Calif.).

2. Lehi (10-1)

Sophomore Ashton Shewell hitting .413 for Pioneers.

3. Lone Peak (16-2)

Knights open Region 3 play with PG at Lehi next week.

4. Westlake (11-5)

Kilika Kafa averaging 4.0 kills per set for Thunder.

5. Orem (16-4)

Tigers get big five-set win vs. Pleasant Grove on March 22.

BOYS LACROSSE

1. Skyridge (9-0)

The Falcons look to be the team to beat in Region 3.

2. Cedar Valley (6-1)

The Aviators got a big win over Lehi and will face Skyridge in a couple of weeks.

3. Lehi (5-1)

The Pioneers have some lessons to learn from coming up short at Cedar Valley.

4. Payson (7-2)

The Lions prepared for Region 8 play by battling a lot of Class 5A and 6A opponents — and beating most of them.

5. Springville (5-2)

The Red Devils get a chance to move up when they face Lehi after spring break.

GIRLS LACROSSE

1. Salem Hills (8-0)

Skyhawks unbeaten entering Region 7 play.

2. Skyridge (5-2)

14-13 loss to Salem Hills shows Falcons on the right track.

3. Lone Peak (5-2)

Neuenschwander, Lisonbee and McMurray have combined for 66 goals.

4. Provo (5-2)

Bulldogs start Region 8 with a 3-0 record.

5. Lehi (4-2)

Pioneers opened Region 3 play with 12-11 victory against PG.
