Prep Roundup: State Track revs up for big finish on Saturday

The state track meet brings thousands of athletes, family and friends to BYU’s Clarence Robison Track for three days of competition — and, as it turns out so far, cooler weather.
It rained on opening day (Thursday) and was overcast and in the mid-60s on Friday, with moments of sun poking out through the clouds. Threats of rain continue on Saturday with the highs in the low 70s which could affect times in many of the finals.
Future BYU athlete Jane Hedengren of Timpview broke her own state record in the 3,200-meter final on Thursday, finishing in a time of 9:48.73. Hedengren later anchored Timpview’s 4×800 relay squad and won that race in a time of 9:19.30, along with Daphne Batmale, Gwen Boulton and Lily Alder.
Hedengren will also compete in the 800 meters and the 1600 meters.
Maya Bybee of Lone Peak won the 6A 3200-meter race in 10:35.63, with American Fork’s Skye Jensen coming in second. Bybee later helped the Knights’ 4×800 meter relay team to victory, running with Brielle Nilsson, Zoey Nilsson and Paityn Rohatinksy to a time of 9:14.49.

Lone Peak’s Matthew Bryant won both the shot put and discus in the 6A competition. His toss of 63-03 in the shot put was a season high and he managed a throw of 197-07 to claim the the discus crown.
American Fork’s Ryan Miller won the long jump with a distance of 22-8.25, followed by Lehi’s Joshua Keel (21-09.25) in second.
Cedar Valley’s 4×200 girls relay team of Della Ballard, Saidey Johnson, Emerson Scott and Kelsey Woodbury raced to a win in a time of 1:42.00 in the 5A competition. Johnson later claimed the pole vault title, soaring 11-0.0.
Springville’s Easton Leavitt fired off a throw of 187-02.0 in the 5A javelin to win that event.
After Day 1, American Fork led the team scores in both boys and girls competition. The Cavemen scored 51 points and led second place Herriman (41) and third place Lone Peak (26).

Maple Mountain was tied with Viewmont at the top of the 5A boys standings with 33 points each. Springville was in third with 31 points.
Spanish Fork topped the 5A girls standings with 32 points, followed closely by Timpview with 30 points.
On Friday, Julie Moore of Mountain View defended her state title in the 4A 3200 by winning this year’s race in 10:48.18. Madelyn Embley of Orem finished second at 10:55.16.
Deiderick Witt of Timpanogos claimed victory in the 4A boys 3200, finishing in a time of 9:08.54. Kyle Steadman of Mountain View was second (9:09.06) and Orem’s Takashi Shipp fourth (9:25.55).
Brennan Powell of Timpanogos topped 13-0.0 in the 4A pole vault to win the gold medal in that event.
State Softball

No. 7 Maple Mountain scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure a 12-11 victory against Cyprus, winning their 5A Super Regional matchup two games to none. McClain Carter and Kyla Donagan drove in three runs each for the Golden Eagles (19-8), who now advance to bracket play next week at the Valley Softball Complex in Taylorsville.
No. 1 seed Salem Hills shut out No. 17 Wasatch 10-0 to sweep the Wasps. Keyana Murray struck out six and allowed just two hits to get the win for the Skyhawks (23-4).
No. 9 Spanish Fork, which had won the previous four 5A state championships, was eliminated by No. 8 Taylorsville 10-3 in Game 2 of their series.
No. 6 Springville topped No. 11 Cedar Valley 16-6 in Game 1 of their best-of-3 Super Regional, scoring nine runs in the bottom of the third. Kalia Sjoberg drove in four runs for the Red Devils (19-6). Sami DeLlamas and Brooklynn Richardson had three hits apiece for Springville.
In 6A, No. 6 Westlake thrashed No. 11 Farmington 14-2 to sweep that series. Ryan Pead was 5 for 5 at the plate and drove in four runs with a pair of home runs for the Thunder (20-7).
No. 4 Lehi eliminated No. 13 Skyridge with a 9-0 victory in Game 2. Abbi Harroun struck out 12 batters and gave up just two hits in getting the win on the mound, with Maya Maughan pitching the final two innings for the Pioneers (22-8).
No. 2 Pleasant Grove took care of No. 15 Lone Peak 13-3 to win their series 2-0. Keslie Draney, Maya Pawalek and Mary Severe drove in two runs each for the Vikings (23-6).
No. 14 American Fork lost to No. 3 Mountain Ridge 10-0 and was eliminated from the tournament.
Boys Tennis
Region 3 foes Skyridge and American Fork were tied for first in 6A boys tennis after the first day of competition at Salt Lake City’s Liberty Park.
The Falcons and the Cavemen scored 25 points each. Farmington was third with 22 and Lone Peak fourth with 20. American Fork and Skyridge enter Saturday’s semifinal round with five athletes each. Lone Peak has four athletes in the semifinals and Farmington two.
The Knights are the defending 6A champions but will be hard pressed to hold off AF and Skyridge on Saturday.
The 4A boys tennis tournament was being held on Friday, and will run its final concurrently with 6A on Saturday.
