At first glance, it looked like a promising start for the home team.
Timpview’s defense stopped Springville on the first drive of Friday night’s Region 7 showdown in Provo, giving the Thunderbirds the ball with a chance to seize the momentum.
It was Red Devil junior defensive back Sioasi Toki, however, who ended up setting the tone for the game.
When Timpview tried a simple out-route pass, Toki was ready.
“I just tried to cut out,” Toki said “I just saw the ball thrown under and I just picked it.”
As he moved in front and snatched the ball out of the air, all he saw in front of him was green turf.
“That’s exciting,” he said.
Springville head coach Dave Valeti explained that the Red Devils had mixed up the coverage a little bit and that put Toki in position to make the play.
“We were in zone coverage on the play before and I think they thought we were going to drop to a zone again,” Valeti said. “But we went to man there and by the time they realized it, the ball was in the air. Our guy grabbed it and made a play defensively.”
Toki sprinted into the end zone from 31 yards out for the first pick six of his career, sending the message that Springville was locked in defensively. That proved to be the story of the game as the Red Devil kept Timpview from getting anything going as Springville rolled to the 28-0 shutout win.
“We practiced really hard for this,” Toki said. “When it came down to it, we performed.”
Both Toki and Valeti said that the Red Devils hadn’t forgotten the 45-0 loss to the Thunderbirds in 2024.
“Most of these guys were here last year when we got beat up last year, so they had that taste in their mouth,” Valeti said. “They were pretty determined. They executed the game plan which is fun to see, especially at this time of the season.”
Springville’s defense forced three more turnovers (two interceptions and a fumble recovery) while the special teams got points when a Timpview snap on a punt went out of the back of the end zone for a safety.
Toki’s TD would’ve been enough by itself to give the Red Devils the win but the visitors also ground out some solid scoring drives with their punishing run game.
Springville junior Treyton Harris exploded for a 30-yard scoring run early in the second quarter to double the lead, then Red Devil senior Tua Naufahu tacked on a pair of TD runs (three yards and five yards) to put the game away (the game was called with 4:17 left in the fourth quarter due to lightening).
About the only thing that didn’t go Springville’s way was a blocked extra point and a stop on a two-point conversion attempt, but the safety put the Red Devils in position to match the 28-0 win they had over Maple Mountain the week before.
“That’s two shutouts in a row and that’s fun,” Valeti said. “The kids enjoy that. The strength of our defense is the depth and the versatility. Against some teams you’ve got to play your nickel and dime a lot, while against others, like tonight, you’ve got to stay in your base and play tough against the run.”
He credited his athletes for always showing up ready to give their all.
“It’s just a bunch of selfless guys,” Valeti said. “Sometimes they’re in there the whole game and sometimes their number’s not getting called, but they still believe in in the next guy up. It’s a total team mentality, more so than any team I’ve coached.”
He hopes that will continue to make a big difference for the Red Devils as the regular season wraps up and they get ready for the postseason.
“We preach to the kids that we’re a complimentary team,” Valeti said. “We play good defense. We have been good on special teams. Our offense is unique. And we’ve all bought into it. The kids have bought into what we’re doing and I think that’ll take us as far as we can go.”
Toki said the Springville’s strength is just being in the moment.
“We don’t get too ahead of ourselves,” he said. “We just play ball.
Springville (7-1) next plays at Spanish Fork on Oct. 9, while Timpview (3-5) will look to bounce back when it heads to Pleasant Grove on the same evening.
Both games are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
