Lone Peak's Austin Jones plays out of the sand on Hole No. 17 in the 6A boys state golf championships at The Links at Sleepy Ridge in Orem on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2025.

It was an epic battle between two Region 3 juggernauts at the 6A state golf meet held at the Links at Sleepy Ridge Monday and Tuesday.

In the end, Corner Canyon at 549 (27-under) won the 6A title while Lone Peak at 552 (-24) finished as the runner-up. Knights sophomore Blake Brown won medalist honors by shooting 65-67-132 (-12) on the Par 72 layout.

It was the third straight 6A state title for Corner Canyon but Lone Peak had won the four before that in what has become a great rivalry on the links.

The battle between the teams was well represented in the final grouping that had Brown and Corner Canyon’s Will Pizza in a tight contest to be top medalist. Brown came into the day with a one-shot lead on Pizza and both turned in a 33 on the front nine. Brown had four birdies and a bogey while Pizza posted three birdies and the rest pars.

After the turn, both Brown and Pizza had pars on the next three holes and each birdied the par 5 No. 13, then parred the next three holes. Both birdied the par 5 No. 17 hole setting up some high drama.

On hole No. 18, Brown tubed his tee right down the middle while Pizza found some trouble in a low area with his lie in some bark surrounding a tree. He was just outside of Brown so he went first and his second shot went through the green and was just two feet from going out-of-bounds through the green into the parking lot. This is where Brown took control and played it to the middle of the green.

Pizza then took one for the team so to speak as Corner Canyon had a four-stroke lead. Instead of taking on the pin and bringing water and a big number possibly into play, he played to the fat part of the green and two-putted for bogey to send the Chargers to the team title.

“I wasn’t looking at the score but my coach (Derek Farr) told me that all I needed to do was tie him on the hole,” Brown said. “I’m pretty excited. It’s a dream that I have had for a while.”

Brown said it was sort of a match play scenario versus worrying about other golfers in the field, and in fact, no more than one stroke separated Brown and Pizza until the final hole.

“It was kind of weird,” related Brown. “It felt like match play kind of, trying to match him on every hole.”

And though Lone Peak fell short of its team goals Farr was happy that Brown responded under pressure to pull off top honors.

“I’m so happy for him,” Farr said. “I sent out an email to the parents last night and told them that I tell the kids I don’t really care about the individual because if we play well that will take care of itself and I thought Blake did a good job with that.”

Though it was nearly a perfect day in both temperature and no winds to speak of, Brown still felt the course had some teeth.

“It was playing tough, a lot of hard pins out there,” stated Brown.

After Day 1, Lone Peak held a slim one-stroke advantage over Corner Canyon but that was erased as their golfers made the turn, and by the time the leading groups hit hole No. 15, Corner Canyon was actually ahead by two strokes. Then as the second to last group of finished, the Chargers had extended their lead over the Knights to four.

“The kids had a phenomenal year,” said Farr. “You can’t take what happened the last two days and characterize the type of young men they are. We didn’t have our best today and Corner (Canyon) did and my hats off to them.”

In team golf, schools can count their top four golfers. And Corner Canyon showed a bit more depth as their golfers finished tied for second, fourth, with two others tied for fifth.

Lone Peak’s next best golfers were Ryder Huish and Noah Goeckeritiz, who both shot 8-under to tie for eighth. Austin Jones was the Knight’s fourth best score with a two-day total of 1-under and tied for 13th.

American Fork had a great season and finished in fifth place in the team standings as Jack Davis led the Cavemen by shooting 3-under for the two days to tie for eighth. As a team Cedar Valley made the top ten with Titan Sumner being the top Aviator in the tournament finishing tied for 17th at 1-over par.

If a team couldn’t qualify for Day 2 by being in the top ten, one could still qualify as an individual and Lehi’s Jordan Ofahengaue did just that, finishing at 1-under tied for 13th.

CLASS 5A

At TalonsCove Golf Course in Saratoga Springs, Skyline staged another epic battle with Olympus in the team race, finally holding off the Titans by one stroke — 575 (-1) to to 576 (even)  –for the 5A title.

Skyline has won seven of the past eight 5A championships.

Eagles senior Austin Shelley won medalist honors in dramatic fashion, rolling in a birdie putt on a playoff hole to edge out senior Will Pedersen of Olympus.

Shelley birdied 17 and turned in a par on 18, while Pedersen also birdied 17 but had a double bogey on 18, setting up the playoff hole.

West Field took third in the team race with a score of 591 (+15) and Spanish Fork surged to fourth with a 595 (+19). Timpview finished one stroke back in fifth with a 596 (+20).

Carson Peterson, a sophomore at Salem Hills, tied for third with Corver Barnes of Viewmont at 138 (-6). Timpview senior Calvin Lillywhite carded a 139 (-5) to tie for fifth.
