There was a lightning delay of over 90 minutes before the kickoff of the 5A Region 7 match-up between Springville and Spanish Fork Thursday night, but the Red Devils came out ready to play and completely dominated their rival 49-3.

Asked what he did during the delay, Red Devil head coach Dave Valeti said, “We did some visualization exercises for a few minutes but mostly played games.”

One of those games was a round robin Roshambo tournament, or what we call in America, “rock-paper-scissors.”

Junior standout Tua Naufahu reportedly took “fourth place” in the game but was definitely the star player for Springville during their romp over Spanish Fork.

Naufahu is listed in the program at 6-foot-1 and 235 pounds, a tight end on offensive and a defensive end on defense. Bottom line, he plays all over the field and is a wrecking ball.

Springville offensive coordinator Doug Bills uses old-school principles of physical play which has been a standard of the program for decades, but he also has new wrinkles where Naufahu lines up as the quarterback in a Wildcat formation. Naufahu has shined in this role as witnessed by opening up the Red Devil scoring with a 18-yard scoring run.

Then on defense, just before halftime, he put one of the final daggers on Springville’s blowout win by returning a fumble 23 yards for a score. It wasn’t just the awareness to pick up the ball but despite being surrounded by the Spanish Fork offense, he burst out of the scrum to paydirt.

“I just saw the ball on the floor and my natural instincts were to get the ball and run,” Naufahu said. “I just got the ball and kept moving my feet and kept spinning. Then the next thing you know I was in the open field and I saw green and went to the end zone.”

But between Naufahu’s scores there was plenty of offense. And though Springville likes to run the ball, they scored twice through the air as Siaosi Toki and Zach Henderson hauled in 80 and 30 yard passes respectively from Beckett Burton, who one could call Springville’s passing quarterback. And then good for measure, Treyton Harris had two touchdown scampers of 47 and 17 yards.

The second quarter was a house of horrors for Spanish Fork as they gave up 35 points and the last score by Naufahu made sure the running clock was used in the second half. About the only things that went right for the Dons was a 36-yard first quarter field goal by Preston Jones and perhaps the hot chocolate sales at the concession stand during the long delay.

Tuiono Valeti added an 8-yard scoring run midway through the third quarter for Springville to cap the Red Devil scoring as Ben Smith hit all seven extra point attempts.

Spanish Fork had a chance to score late in the final stanza but Springville’s Dallas Torres secured an interception in the back of the end zone on what proved to be the final play of the game.

Dave Valeti was very pleased with how his team came out to play after the long delay.

“They played great,” Valeti said. “Spanish Fork is a good team, they’re coached well. We told them all week that this will be one of the best coached teams we’ve played and our guys rose to the occasion and executed.”

Valeti also gave props to his offensive line.

“It’s just a testament to the strength of our team and our O-line,” added Valeti. “We rely on them. It doesn’t matter who’s behind them really, they’re good, they’re strong, and they put in the work which is great.”

This powerful offensive line is made up of Cade Johnson, Chase Lamenta, Uili Folaumahina, Brigham Durfey, and Daniel Marquez and they truly dominated in the trenches.

Springville (8-1, 5-1) will finish up its regular season when it hosts Wasatch (4-5, 2-4), while Spanish Fork (3-6, 2-4) will hit the road to play Timpview (4-5, 4-2). Because of fall break, both games will be played Wednesday at 7 p.m.
