Valley Top 5: Final week of football sets up state playoffs

Each week, Daily Herald sports writers Darnell Dickson and Brandon C. Gurney rank the top five teams in the Utah Valley in football, girls soccer and girls volleyball (records as of Oct. 13):

FOOTBALL

1. Skyridge (6-2)

Falcons finish regular season at American Fork on Wednesday.

2. Orem (6-2)

Tight end and Baylor commit Kai Wesley with two TD catches vs. Payson.

3. Springville (8-1)

Tua Naufahu is a load in Red Devils power running game.

4. Lehi (6-3)

Dominating wins vs. AF, Lone Peak gets everyone’s attention.

5. Westlake (7-2)

Boston Fountaine with 5 TD passes, 1 TD run for Thunder vs. Cedar Valley.

GIRLS SOCCER

1. Lone Peak (15-1-1)

The Knights haven’t lost since late August and enter the 6A championships as the clear favorite.

2. American Fork (10-5)

The Cavemen are playing very well and should make some noise in the 6A playoffs after topping off the season with a big win over Lehi.

3. Springville (13-5)

The Red Devils finished off the regular season with big wins over Maple Mountain and Timpview

4. Spanish Fork (13-5)

The Dons had a bit of a hiccup with a 2-0 loss to Wasatch to end the regular season, but should make some noise in the 5A playoffs

5. Mountain View (14-3)

The Bruins stand as Utah County’s most-likely team to make a deep run in the 4A playoffs

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

1. Skyridge (22-2)

Falcons sweep of Lone Peak creates momentum as state tourney approaches.

2. Orem (20-3)

Junior Haven Michaelis leads Tigers with 210 kills (3.6 per set).

3. Mountain View (19-7)

Bruins trio of Richardson, Wesley and Carlson gives opponents fits.

4. Pleasant Grove (13-9)

Vikings’ Taytum Nelson, Molly Mitchell best middle blocker tandem in 5A.

5. Lone Peak (17-10)

Not a typical season for Knights but still have enough talent to make a run.
