Each week, Daily Herald sports writers Darnell Dickson and Brandon C. Gurney rank the top five teams in the Utah Valley in football, girls soccer and girls volleyball. Soccer is in the state semifinals so this week we rank football and girls volleyball only. (records as of Oct. 20):

FOOTBALL

1. Skyridge (7-2)

Are Falcons headed for another title showdown with Corner Canyon in 6A?

2. Orem (8-2)

Tigers have the talent to go all the way in Class 5A.

3. Springville (9-1)

Power running game, stingy defense make Red Devils tough to beat.

4. Provo (6-4)

Don’t look at the record, look at 60+ points in three of past four games.

5. Westlake (7-3)

Thunder trying to make some noise in 6A playoffs.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

1. Skyridge (24-2)

Kylie Buttars with 337 kills (3.9 per set), Hadyn Smith with 311 (3.4).

2. Orem (25-3)

Tigers on streak of 16 consecutive wins vs. in-state opponents.

3. Mountain View (20-7)

Bruins versatility could be trouble in for opponents in 4A tournamment.

4. Pleasant Grove (16-9)

Vikings rolled through Region 7 with a 12-1 record.

5-tie. Maple Mountain (20-6)

Sophomore setter Adison Thornton with 693 assists, 53 service aces.

5-tie. Lone Peak (17-10)

Knights still a threat to win sixth state title in a row, but it’s an uphill battle.
