Prep Football Playoffs: Timpview handles Wasatch in 5A first round

It’s no secret that the Timpview football team is used to winning.
The Thunderbirds have won 12 state titles (the last in 2023) and notched their eighth straight season with a playoff win on Friday, powering past No. 20 seed Wasatch 40-15in the Class 5A first round.
The last time Timpview didn’t win a playoff game in a season was in 2017, where it fell to Woods Cross 28-24 in the first round of the 5A playoffs.
The T-Birds, the No. 13 seed in this year’s tournament, also pushed their record above .500 (6-5) for the first time this season.
Senior Cole Engemann threw a pair of touchdown passes and Tonga Tauteoli contributed a 30-yard interception return as Timpview ran with a 20-point second quarter to a 27-6 halftime lead against Wasatch.
The T-Birds face No. 4 seed Orem in the second round next Friday. It will be the fourth straight season the two teams have played each other twice — once in the regular season and once in the playoffs. The Tigers defeated Timpview 22-9 on Sept. 26.
CLASS 5A
No. 17 Northridge 21, No. 16 Pleasant Grove 7
Big plays ruled the game for the Knights, which scored on three plays of better than 70 yards. Dontae Dyson scored on a 95-yard kickoff return and a 73-yard run. A 95-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Ortiz to Makai So’o in the third quarter completed the scoring for Northridge (5-5), which held the Vikings to a 10-yard Dexton Nuttall touchdown run in the second quarter.
Pleasant Grove finishes the season with a 4-7 record and Northridge moves on to play top-seeded West in the second round.
No. 19 Spanish Fork 42, No. 14 Hunter 7
Nixon Warren and James Buck scored two touchdowns each as the Dons picked up a dominant first-round road victory.
Spanish Fork (4-7) jumped to a 35-0 halftime lead on its way to victory, which sets up a second-round matchup with No. 3 seed Springville. The Red Devils won the previous meeting with the Dons 49-3 on Oct. 9.
CLASS 4A
No. 12 Salem Hills 35, No. 21 Mountain View 12.
Ryder Hales fired five touchdown passes as the Skyhawks soared past the Bruins. Hales’ fifth scoring pass, this one a 20-yarder to Payton Higginson, gave Salem Hills a 35-0 lead early in the third quarter.
Mountain View completes the season at 3-7. The Skyhawks (7-3) will take on fifth-seed Provo in the second round. The Bulldogs won the first meeting 49-25 on Sept. 19.
No. 15 Timpanogos 41, No. 18 Bear River 14
The Timberwolves avenged last year’s upset loss to the Bears as Andrew Hillstead passed for three touchdowns and ran for another. This one was over quickly, Luke Bergin’s 30-yard field goal late in the second quarter giving Timpanogos a 31-0 halftime lead.
The Timberwolves (5-5) will face No. 2 seed Crimson Cliffs in Friday’s second round.
CLASS 6A
No. 16 Layton 41, No. 17 Cedar Valley 16
The Lancers (3-8) jumped out to a 28-0 lead in the first half and on the strength of three touchdown passes by Tillman Thomas, eliminated the Aviators. Rigdon Peck had a 35-yard touchdown pass late for Cedar Valley which finishes the season 3-7.
Layton will face No. 1 seed Corner Canyon in the second round.
1A 8-PLAYER
No. 7 UMA-Camp Williams 55, No. 19 Panguitch 6
The Marauders led 28-6 at halftime and extended the lead with a 20-point fourth quarter against the Bobcats in the rout. UMA-Camp Williams (5-4) advances to the quarterfinals and will take on No. 2 seed Millard.
