Valley Top 5: Skyridge offense cooking in non-conference football schedule

Each week, Daily Herald sports writers Darnell Dickson and Brandon C. Gurney rank the top five teams in the Utah Valley in football, girls soccer and girls volleyball (records as of Sept. 8):

FOOTBALL

1. Skyridge (4-0)

Falcons averaging nearly 59 points per game, play at Cherry Creek (Colo.) next.

2. American Fork (4-0)

Cavemen doing it with defense, allowing just 15.5 points per game.

3. Lone Peak (3-1)

Knights have to put forfeit vs. Bishop Gorman out of their minds.

4. Westlake (4-0)

Best start for Thunder since opening 6-0 in 2010.

5. Orem (2-2)

Super-talented Tigers are still trying to find their groove.

GIRLS SOCCER

1. Lone Peak (8-1-1)

Paced by senior midfielder Kate Fuller, who leads her team in scoring, the Knights keep rolling as they head into region play this week.

2. Timpview (8-1)

Big wins over both Salem Hills and Spanish Fork reestablishes the Thunderbirds as the No. 2 team in our rankings.

3. Springville (8-2)

The Red Devils move up in the rankings due to shutout victories over both Spanish Fork (2-0) and Salem Hills (4-0) last week

4. American Fork (5-2)

The Cavemen had a bit of a stumble losing to Farmington and will look to rebound this week as they enter Region 3 play.

5. Mountain View (6-3)

The Bruins blew out Summit Academy 11-0 and feature an intriguing young lineup that could make some noise this year

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

1. Skyridge (13-0)

Falcons a perfect 6-0 at Utah Valley Invitational.

2. Orem (11-2)

4A Tigers only two losses are to 6A Skyridge.

3. American Fork (10-1)

Are Cavemen for real? This week they take on Skyridge and Lone Peak.

4. Lehi (10-3)

Pioneers got a good win over Bountiful at Utah Valley Invitational.

5. Lone Peak (8-4)

Knights still trying to figure things out but will always be a contender.
