Wesley brothers part of talented cast for Orem football

Orem's Kai Wesley celebrates following his touchdown reception against Springville in a high school football game on Friday, Sept. 5, 2025.Orem High football is littered with great athletes.
Two of them are the Wesley brothers, who play tight end/receiver for the Tigers.
Older brother Kai Wesley — at 6-foot-7 and 236 pounds –presents a huge target and when he gets the ball he can run over and through would-be tacklers. Wesley will graduate early so he can take his talents to Baylor for spring practice.
Younger brother Steeler — just a sophomore — is 6-3 and 175 pounds and already on the radar of college scouts. It stands to reason he will have a similar frame to his older brother when he is a senior.
As fate would have it neither player would score in a game where Orem scored nine touchdowns in a 63-3 blowout victory over Spanish Fork. In fact, Orem is so loaded that nine different athletes went over the goal line for touchdowns, keeping kicker Ben Bradley busy as he nailed all nine extra point attempts.
The name Wesley is definitely familiar in Utah County athletic circles. Kai and Steeler’s father, Tika, was a great basketball player for Provo High School. Two of his uncles, Mekeli and Russell, played on the Guam national team as it tried to qualify for the Olympics. But only one of his uncles, TG, actually played football, as the other brothers concentrated solely on basketball playing at the college level.
However, this generation of Wesleys play multiple sports as both Kai and Steeler play basketball and baseball, though Kai will miss the 2026 Tiger baseball season for spring football.
“My oldest uncle (Mekeli) really set the standard for the last name Wesley,” Kai Wesley said. “Switching over and playing football has really opened up a whole new world for me and my little brother and opportunities are crazy and we’re going to keep going with the last name Wesley.”
For Steeler, he’s glad to have an older brother like Kai to show him the ropes.
“It’s good to learn from him. He’s always teaching me stuff at practice,” Steeler Wesley said. “It’s just fun playing with my brother.”
As far as the game went, Kai Wesley was glad to see the successes of his teammates including his younger brother.
“It was really fun out there,” Kai Wesley said of the blowout win against Spanish Fork. “We finally started clicking the way we’re supposed to be playing. You saw what happened and that’s the way we should be playing every game from now on.”
Most of the Tiger touchdowns came via the ground though the passing game was sharp.
Beckham Curtis got the Tigers on the board with a 57-yard scamper. Two more first quarter scores came via a one-yard plunge by Easton Kojima then another long scoring run of 72 yards to paydirt by Mack Ellison.
Spanish Fork finally got on the board in the second quarter via a 26-yard field goal by Preston Jones which was set up by some nice catches by Gage Christensen. But after this field goal it was all Tigers as they poured on 28 more points before halftime.
Tiger quarterback Tayden Ka’awa found Kaue Akana on a 18-yard scoring strike which actually was Orem’s only touchdown pass of the game. The ground assault continued with a 14-yard run by Oliver Bills, and one-yard runs by Max Stonebraker and Aisa Galea’i, who set up his score with an interception on defense.
Only the running clock in the second half slowed down the Tigers. KT Fetalaiga scored from four yards out and then in the final stanza the Tiger defense got into the act with a 75-yard pick six by JaVoni Halalilo.
Orem head coach Lance Reynolds was pleased with the play of his team and the fact contributions came from many sources.
“Up until this point, I haven’t really seen us fire on all cylinders, but we did a little better piecing that together tonight,” Reynolds said. “One thing that I was really telling our coaching staff was that I hoped that we could put it all together and play like we’re capable because we have so many guys that have worked so hard to be good, to be contributors and sometimes it’s hard to distribute to all of them.”
Orem (3-2, 2-0) will host Wasatch (3-2, 1-1) next week while Spanish Fork (1-4, 0-2) hits the road to play Pleasant Grove (1-4, 1-1). Both Region 8 games will be Friday at 7 pm.
