Two high schools three miles apart threw a party and everybody came.

The stands at Falcon Stadium (aka, “The Nest”) were full Thursday night and hundreds of fans spilled onto the berm that surrounds the field as well as onto the sidelines.

Both sides were thoroughly entertained as Skyridge and Lehi combined for over 900 yards of offense but the Falcons came out the winner in the Region 3 showdown, overcoming a pair of double-digit deficits (21-7 and 38-28) to rally for a 42-38 victory against their closest and fiercest rival.

“We’re the best in Lehi,” Skyridge quarterback Kaneal Sweetwyne said. “So I’m gonna keep that.”

The Pioneers relied on big plays to take an early lead and battle with the Falcons, logging touchdown plays of 75, 55 and 45 as well as three interceptions that set up scoring drives.

Skyridge, meanwhile, had to persevere through the setbacks. Sweetwyne struggled with two early interceptions and finished with three, but eventually found his groove. One of the state’s top recruits, the 6-foot-4, 210-pound quarterback was first offered by BYU and picked up a University of Utah offer last week. On Thursday he finished 30 of 43 for 371 yards and two touchdowns while running for a third score.

“Kaneal does a great job,” Skyridge head coach Justin Hemm said. “I think he’s been tremendous at understanding that one play is not going to dictate the game, right? He was able to settle in and make huge plays for us all night long. We put a lot of trust in him. I’m most proud of how he’s responding to those hard situations.”

Lehi’s 265-pound defensive tackle, Briggs Love, had himself a huge first quarter. He picked off a Sweetwyne screen pass and rumbled to the 6-yard line, setting up Devaughn Eka 6-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead. Treyson Fabrizio intercepted another pass on the Falcons next possession. BYU commit Legend Glasker took a reverse 63 yards to the Skyridge 1 and Love, playing fullback, powered in for a 14-0 Lehi lead midway through the first quarter.

The Falcons cut the deficit to 14-7 but Glasker struck again, taking a pass from Cash Hollingshead 75 yards for a touchdown and 21-7 advantage after one quarter.

Skyridge got rolling in the second quarter and scored 21 points, including Briggs Parker’s 23-yard interception return for a touchdown.

“I just saw Legend running across the field and as soon as I saw the ball, it was a little bit overthrown,” Parker said. “I knew it was just coming to me. As soon as I caught it I saw open field. That’s it.”

Lehi led 24-21 late in the second quarter but Sweetwyne needed just over a minute to get the Falcons into the end zone for a 28-24 halftime lead.

A second pick by Fabrizio gave some momentum to the Pioneers in the third quarter and Eka broke loose on a 45-yard touchdown run on 3rd-and-1 for a 31-28 Lehi lead. On the Pioneers next possession, Hollingshead spotted Cam Wren wide open over the middle for a 55-yard scoring play, giving the visitors a 38-28 advantage with 3:18 to play in the third quarter.

Sweetwyne led his team on two fourth quarter scoring drives. The first finished with a 1-yard Sweetwyne plunge on the first play of the fourth quarter and the second culminated with a Lincoln Tahi’s second short scoring run, giving Skyridge a 42-38 lead with 7:17 to play.

The story of the fourth quarter, though, was the Falcons defense, which stopped Lehi on three straight possessions and didn’t allow the Pioneers to cross midfield.

“That was huge,” Hemm said. “Field position is something we talk about every single week, understanding how important field position is throughout the course of the game. Our defense getting off the field is great, but also gives our offense the opportunity with a shorter field to drive and do what we need.”

Skyridge (5-1 overall, 1-0 Region 3) was coming off a 51-28 loss to Colorado’s top-ranked team, Cherry Creek, and has epic matchups with Utah’s No. 1 (Corner Canyon) and Lone Peak in the next two weeks.

“I mean, this is a grind,” Hemm said. “We’ve got a four-week stretch here that’s a huge grind when you go Cherry Creek, Lehi, Corner Canyon and Lone Peak. But that’s this region. It’s tough, but ultimately, all it does is prepares us for where we want to be most successful. There’s a lot of things we’ve learned from as a result come October and November.”

Lehi (3-2, 0-1) will host Region 2’s top team, Herriman, next week.
