Stafford’s four touchdowns lead Mountain View past Uintah
The Mountain View student section — known as the “Bruin Crazies” — were able to let loose on Homecoming as the home team defeated Uintah 41-20 Friday night.
The Bruins were led by junior Hyrum Stafford, who scored four times: Three on offense and then in the final stanza on a 41-yard pick six.
As a sophomore last year, Stafford played quarterback, but since the Bruins had so little depth at the position, he couldn’t really play defense. But when Tate Johnson moved in from Wasatch and became the starting quarterback, it allowed Stafford to play both ways.
On defense in this game Stafford actually secured two interceptions. Stafford has not only embraced the change but says he and Johnson have developed a good rapport on offense as Stafford plays tight end but also lines up as a slot receiver and even at running back.
“It’s been different this year, I’m still like a team leader but it’s fun to listen to Tate (Johnson), he’s a great guy,” Stafford said. “It’s nice to have a connection right, because I know where’s looking and stuff.”
Stafford also has enjoyed playing different positions.
“I’ve played all over the place and it’s fun to learn,” added Stafford.
Stafford’s dominant play didn’t go unnoticed by his head coach Uani Unga.
“It’s been good,” Unga said of Stafford switching positions. “Last year we wanted to play him on defense but we couldn’t, now we can and it’s given us a lot of freedom to mess around.”
Stafford comes from a hugely athletic family. His father Rick played professional basketball in Europe while his mother Maren was a multi-sport athlete in college and is the head girls wrestling coach at the school. His two older brothers Radi and Eli were state champion wrestlers, and as a sophomore last year, Hyrum made the 4A state championship finals. He is also the first cousin of former Orem and Utah State quarterback Cooper Legas.
Hyrum Stafford’s other scores came on a 80-yard scamper to paydirt, a 6-yard reception from Johnson and another 5-yard run.
Johnson threw for three touchdowns including a 72-yarder to Koa Giles, while Mountain View cracked the scoreboard with a 2-yard reception by Briggy Moses.
Mountain View (3-3 overall, 1-1 4A Region 8) will be on the road against rival Timpanogos (3-4, 0-2) while Uintah (1-6, 0-2) hosts Salem Hills (3-3, 1-2). Both games will be Friday at 7 pm.
UMACW 33 St. Joseph’s 29
Utah Military Academy-Camp Williams (UMACW) secured a comeback win over St. Joseph’s in its Homecoming. Since the Marauders don’t have a football field on campus, they played their game Friday afternoon at Skyridge High School.
Marauder quarterback David Shern ran for two touchdowns and threw another to Shayne Simpson. James Sullivan also crossed the goal line on a run while UMACW got a fumble return for touchdown by Houston Snow.
The Marauders show resiliency overcoming a 21-6 hole early and a 29-27 deficit late in the game. The Marauders only had two wins last year but the win over St. Joseph’s moved them to 4-3 on the season. UMACW competes at the 8-player football level and will travel to Escalante for a game next week to be played Friday at 4 p.m.
