Valley Top 5: American Fork moves to top of football rankings after upset of Lone Peak

Each week, Daily Herald sports writers Darnell Dickson and Brandon C. Gurney rank the top five teams in the Utah Valley in football, girls soccer and girls volleyball (records as of Sept. 29):

FOOTBALL

1. American Fork (6-1)

Worthington the hero, field goal in final 23 seconds to beat Lone Peak.

2. Lone Peak (5-2)

Tied AF game with 2:33 to play but couldn’t stop final Cavemen drive.

3. Skyridge (5-2)

Falcons humbled by Corner Canyon 49-14 in surprise rout.

4. Orem (5-2)

Tigers have risen to No. 1 in Class 5A RPI.

5. Springvllle (6-1)

Red Devils run the ball, and then they run it some more.

GIRLS SOCCER

1. Lone Peak (13-1-1)

The Knights were tested by Lehi last week, but escaped with a 3-2 win.

2. Spanish Fork (11-4)

The Dons took a thrilling shootout win over Timpview last week to move up one spot in the rankings.

3. American Fork (8-4)

The Cavemen scored a big win over Corner Canyon one week after doing the same in a game versus Lehi.

4. Timpview (12-3)

The Thunderbirds will look to rebound after taking two tough losses to Spanish Fork and Maple Mountain.

5. Mountain View (11-3)

The Bruins have now won six straight games and don’t look to be slowing down any time soon.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

1. Skyridge (17-0)

Corner Canyon coming in hot vs. Falcons on Thursday.

2. Orem (16-2)

Tigers practically untouchable in Region 8 with 15-1 set record.

3. Mountain View (14-4)

Bruins getting great play from high-flying pin hitter Keilani Wesley.

4. Maple Mountain (16-5)

Golden Eagles five wins in a row, rematch with PG Thursday.

5. Lone Peak (14-9)

Knights with three losses in a row for first time since 2017.
