If you want to see Lehi’s softball team play this season, then you’d be well-advised to show up on time.

Take Tuesday’s 19-2 win over American Fork as just the most recent example.

Had you shown up just 10-15 minutes late, you would have missed close to half of the action as the Pioneers put up 10 runs in the first inning in what ultimately proved to be a shortened outing due to USHAA rules dictating the game is over should any team lead by 15 or more runs after three innings is called.

Yes, Lehi is just that good.

For the season the Pioneers have yet to lose a game to an in-state opponent while scoring a bevy of runs in the process. The result is a current 17-2 record that left everyone involved smiling and optimistic after Tuesday’s win.

“We’ve been playing really well and we have a lot of momentum, I feel, after winning four straight against pretty good competition this past Saturday in a tournament,” said Lehi coach Tim Kennedy. “So we’re working to get ready for the state tournament. We’re not looking past anyone, but I’m very happy with what this team has been able to do so far this season.”

As 19 runs scored in just two innings would dictate, everyone in the lineup filled up the box score, although it was Mya Maughan who was perhaps responsible for most of it with her two home runs hit before the Cavemen wisely decided to issue her a walk in her final at-bat. It wasn’t an unusual outing for the senior who has been putting up stellar numbers so far this season.

“The wind was blowing in today, so those home runs were really crunched,” Kennedy said. “Mya started off a bit slow this year, but she’s really dialed in right now and you saw that today.”

Maughan was awarded the game ball for her efforts, and as mentioned, it was an effort fairly typical of her play so far this season. Through 19 games played, with several of those games shortened, the senior has hit four home runs and contributed 26 RBI while lending key leadership to her teammates.

“She’s been very good for us for a while now and she’s a super funny and happy kid. She’s great to have on your team as a coach,” Kennedy said. “She’s been kind of the glue for us this year. She was a leader last year, but this year she’s even more so a player the rest of our team really looks to for leadership. And Mya does great with that.”

As for Maughan, she’s enjoying every moment.

“It’s my senior year and it’s been a great year so far. We’re having a lot of fun out there,” she said. “Our team has a real strong bond because we’ve been together for so long and our bats are really starting to get hot.”

Of course Lehi is much more than just one player with standouts like Piper Emery, Libby Baxter, Brynlee Cook, Liv Davies and several others getting it done from the plate game-in and game-out.

And then there’s the pitching, where Abbi Harroun has confounded opposing batters throughout the season. Harroun was afforded a rest day during Tuesday’s win, but will be be back in action soon to build upon her stellar season.

“Pitching is where it’s at and Abbi has been so good for us this year,” Kennedy said. “She’s just a junior and we took the opportunity to rest her today. We asked a lot of her last year, so she sort of ran out of gas toward the end, so we’re being smarter with that this year. She’s so good when she’s rested and we want to make sure she’s at her best come the state tournament.”

“Abbi is insanely good,” Maughan added.

All factors considered, expectations are high for the Pioneers this season and they work to improve upon last year’s run to the state semifinal final round where they lost to eventual 6A champion Riverton.

“This is definitely one of the best teams I’ve had here,” Kennedy said. “It’s still a young team, so we’re really excited about this year and beyond, but we’re obviously focused on this season and we like our chances. We like how we’re hitting and pitching. I feel like we can work on fielding better, but overall things are really coming together well.”
