Precious few seniors grouped with a bevy of freshmen and sophomores can make for an interesting team dynamic, although for the Spanish Fork Softball team, things seem to be working out just fine.

Take Tuesday’s thrilling 7-5 comeback win over Region 7 rival Maple Mountain as the most recent example.

Sure, veteran senior Lia Higginson did her thing, going 3-4 from the plate while contributing two RBI, one of which came by virtue of a solo home run. But then there were freshmen Taylani Reid and Sydney Worthen hitting home runs themselves with sophomore Paizley Boman also coming up big from both the plate and the pitching circle.

“They just blow me away some days,” said Spanish Fork coach Natalie Jarvis regarding her relatively young roster. “Today was a great win. I was really nervous because we got off great, but then allowed Maple Mountain to come back and didn’t get it done until the end there. But they got it done and I’m just so proud of all of them.”

Trailing 5-3 entering the sixth inning, Reid hit a towering home run to cut the lead to just a one run deficit, setting up a resounding comeback effort in the top top of the seventh. Leading off the scoring in the seventh was Boman hitting an RBI double to tie things up before a Worthen home run brought both Boman and herself home with what proved to be the game-winner.

Boman buckled down to hold the Golden Eagles scoreless in the bottom half of the seventh to come away with the big win.

“She’s a workhorse,” Jarvis said of Boman. “She just wants to always be better and to make those around her better. She’s a fighter. After she gave up those three runs in the fourth inning I felt like she was overthrowing it. So I went out to talk to her and she told me that she was good, and you saw her adjust and finish out strong for the rest of the game. That’s just who she is and she’s always going to give us everything she has.”

Leading all of it was once again Higginson, much as she has all season while adding some very necessary senior leadership.

“Lia is just a true born leader in every sense of the word,” Jarvis said. “She not only knows what needs to be done, but gets it done. I can’t tell you just how important she is for this team and all our young players. Lia is amazing. She keeps everyone in check and I’m so proud of her and the player she is.”

As mentioned, the Dons did yield three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning after McClain Carter roped a 3 RBI triple down the line to give the Golden Eagles a 5-3 lead. But they adjusted, kept their heads up and eventually came through.

With the win Spanish Fork improves to 14-7 on the season and 7-3 in Region 7 play as it works toward making a deep run in the 5A state tournament, much like it has during most years since Jarvis became head coach. Indeed few teams have warranted the type of success Spanish Fork has in winning four straight state championships from 2021 to 2024 with Jarvis hoping this years team can continue to show the strides it has to perhaps add to the lore.

“It’s just exciting to see all of them improve so much this year,” Jarvis concluded. “We’ve been blessed with some really great players here, and especially great pitchers, and we’ve built a great program. Hopefully we can get to where we need to be by the end of the year.”
