Outlook: In 2024 Spanish Fork was literally one play away from winning the school’s first ever state title. There were some steep losses in graduation and Spanish Fork was moved up from 4A to 5A in 2025. Those combined factors led to a bit of a rough season where the Dons finished 4-8 overall and just 2-5 in the Region 7 wars.

Still, the Dons were able to score a 42-7 upset of Hunter in the first round of the playoffs before being knocked out of the tournament by eventual runner-up Springville. Then longtime coach Dustin Smith resigned.

Condie worked with Smith for several years though he took the 2025 season off. He was just expecting to be an assistant and he said Smith’s resignation was a bit of a surprise.

“I didn’t expect it (to be the head coach),” Condie said. “I was thinking of coming back and just helping out with the defense, what I did before. I was trying to figure out if I could make it work (with my work schedule) and coach linebackers and the next thing you know he resigned and then I just felt ‘maybe I had some ideas to help the program’ and here we are”.

As head coach, Condie will call the defense while Gage Loftin will be the offensive coordinator. The 2026 Don staff does have a mixture of both coaches that have been on the staff in recent years and some new faces.

The Dons do have some playmakers with four-year starter Nixon Warren who also has been a key player in the two state championship runs for the baseball program. Condie described Warren as a “Swiss Army Knife” type of player that can line up at several positions on the field both as wide receiver and as a defensive back. The skill positions will be Spanish Fork’s strength as Warren is supported by other players like Kohen Frost and Mason Snow while offensive linemen Kyler Olsen and Kingston Johnson add some muscle up front.

Condie also noted that numbers in the program are up with nearly 80 players suiting up.

Being in 5A Region 7 with gridiron stalwarts like Orem, Springville and Timpview is challenging and certainly the Dons will be battle tested for the playoffs.

What is your favorite team building activity? Condie changed things up versus recent years and took his team to a summer camp hosted by Hurricane High School. While there the team took part in some service projects including one at a goodwill store that served the homeless.

“It was a humbling experience but it was also really cool to see all the boys working and engaged.”
